Consideration is being given to creating a safer pedestrian route along The Strand in Saundersfoot, to provide essential access for pushchairs, families, mobility scooters, and pedestrians.

The suggestion comes following a recent rock fall on the route.

County councillor Chris Williams said: “The rocks involved were of a considerable size and, had they struck a pedestrian or passing vehicle, could have caused significant injury or damage.

“The matter was dealt with promptly, and I would like to extend my thanks to the Pembrokeshire County Council team who attended the site, cleared the debris, and made the area safe.”

The affected section was securely fenced off, with additional barriers placed along the pavement to clearly highlight the hazard and to prevent vehicles and pedestrians from getting too close.

Since the incident, Cllr Williams has met with a Highways Engineer on site, and while he says that it is frustrating that the cliff area appears to fall within unclear ownership, investigations are ongoing to establish responsibility.

A similar incident occurred several years ago in the same location, which led to the installation of a small green fence to contain minor rock movement and mitigate risk.

“Given the recent event and the continued risk to pedestrians, I have suggested to PCC that consideration be given to slightly narrowing the carriageway along this stretch of road,” continued Cllr Williams.

“This would allow for the creation of a safer pedestrian route, providing essential access for pushchairs, families, mobility scooters, and pedestrians.

“The Strand remains one of the busiest roads in the village, with most vehicles having to travel its full length before turning around. Improved pedestrian safety measures in this area would therefore be highly beneficial.

“I will continue to work closely with Councillor Alec Cormack and PCC officers to monitor progress on this matter,” he added,
