It was carnival time in Saundersfoot on Sunday. With the weather every bit as sunny as the atmosphere in the village, crowds sizzled in the sunshine as they thronged every available vantage point to watch the colourful cavalcade. Led by Milford Haven Town Band, the cavalcade of seven floats and a contingent of colourful walking entries, was headed by the flower-bedecked float bearing Carnival Queen Daniella Drummond, attendants Laura Jenkins and Rebecca Bockhard, Carnival King Jonathan Mattick, Fairy Queen Hannah Gray and her attendants Zoe Thomas and Bethan Harding Jones and Prince, Miles Thompson. Although the number of those competing was slightly down on previous years, entries followed both topical and traditional themes, and included the WI Calendar Girls, the Tour de France, the Roaring '20s, the Capture of Saddam, Football Crazy, Andy Pandy and Looby Lou, Country and Western singers and two weather girls, whose umbrellas turned to sun shades. Judging was in the hands of chairman of the village's community council, Clr. Ronnie Brabon, who had earlier crowned the Carnival Queen, fellow councillor, Mandy Allsop, and Diane Watkins, secretary of the football club, who had an extremely difficult task in choosing the winners. Winning best float and the top prize of £100 donated by Colin Sharpe, of the Famous £1 Shop, were Saundersfoot Inner Wheel with their Roaring '20s entry. St. Issell's WI scooped the second prize of £50, given by Redwing Travel, for their Calendar Girls creation, while the third prize of £25, donated by Hillcroft Garage, was won by the Wainwright and Brace families and their Capture of Saddam float. Winners in the fancy dress, sponsored by the Sands nightclub, were: Under Fives - 1. Jackson Dyer (Jack in the Box); 2. Fletcher Dyer (Incredible Hulk). Six to 10 years - 1. Lily and Martha Perkins (The Indian Girls); 2. Lloyd Williams (Delboy); 3. Megan Williams (Wendy of Peter Pan). Eleven and over - 1. Polly Clarke (Angel); 2. Danny Clarke (Zombie); 3. Steve Rowe (The Dude). Best walking group - 1. Connor Lewis, Morgan Lewis and Molly Lewis (Andy Pandy and Friends); 2. Natasha Kinsey and Gemma Amos (Tammy and Dolly, the Country singers); 3. Jodie Smith and Adele Tovey (The Weather Girls). The Inner Wheel Club generously gave their prize back to the organisers, the village's Sports and Social Club. After the presentation of prizes, the fun and laughter continued well into the evening at the King George V Playing Fields, with a children's sports (sponsored by the Rotary Club of Saundersfoot), golden wellie throwing competition, Irish dancing by members of the Hynes School of Irish Dancing, lucky programme draw, a family disco, live music from 'Rising Damp' and a barbecue, provided by Tenby Dolphins. Roy Morgan, chairman of the Sports and Social Club, was delighted with the success of the carnival, staged in association with the Gower Hotel. "The carnival may not have been as big as previous years, possibly due to insurance problems, but everyone who took part seemed to enjoy themselves and we would like to thank them for taking time to participate," he said. "It also gave the people of Saundersfoot the opportunity to mingle with the holidaymakers, which is what a seaside resort is all about."

Chairman of Saundersfoot Community Council, Clr. Ron Brabon, crowns Carnival Queen Daniella Drummond.
