Such was the popularity of Saundersfoot's record-breaking carnival on Sunday that even the sunshine put in an appearance!

Hundreds of spectators turned out to watch the colourful procession and revelled in the summer festivities as they clapped and cheered the lively parade around the village.

Led by Milford Haven Town Band, the bumper cavalcade of no fewer than 11 floats was headed by the flower-bedecked float bearing pretty Carnival Queen Poppy Clarke, her attendants Rachael Williams and Olwyn Williams, Fairy Queen Amy Rawlinson, her attendants Emma Nock and Sophie Davies, Carnival King Tom Baker and Prince Charming Matthew Williams.

This was followed by the pageant of colourful lorry-borne creations and a host of imaginative walking entries, which followed topical and traditional themes, ranging from Wild West Women, the Cheeky Girls and Barbie Collectable to Charlie's Angels, Saddam Hussain seeking Rotarians and Jungle Book characters, plus all the usual carnival favourites.

Judging was in the hands of chairman of the village's community council, Clr. Mrs. Rosemary Hayes MBE, who had earlier crowned the Carnival Queen, and Martin from Milford Haven Town Band, who had an extremely difficult task in choosing the winners.

Winning best float and the top prize of £100 donated by Colin Sharpe, of the Famous £1 Shop, were the 'Saloon Bar Girls' from St. Issell's WI.

The Rotary Club of Saundersfoot scooped the second prize of £50, given by Redwing Travel, for their 'Where is Saddam Hussain?' float, while the third prize of £25, donated by Hillcroft Garage, was won by Saundersfoot Playschool and their Jungle Book Two entry.

Winners in the fancy dress competition, sponsored by the Sands, were:

Under Fives - The Incredible Hulk (Charlie John).

Five to nine years - Harry Potter.

Over nine years - Absolutely Fabulous (Stephanie Amos and Nina Thomas).

Best group - Bob the Builder (Connor Lewis, Morgan Lewis, Fletcher Dyer, Jackson Dyer and Roxanne Walton).

After the presentation of prizes, the fun and laughter continued well into the evening at the King George V Playing Fields, with a children's sports, golden wellie throwing competition, Irish dancing by Celtic Irish Claddagh Dance Group, lucky programme draw, a family disco, live music and barbecue provided by Tenby Dolphins.

Roy Morgan, chairman of the organisers, Saundersfoot Sports and Social Club, was delighted with the success of the village's celebrations, which were staged in association with the Gower Hotel.

"It has been a superb carnival with the biggest ever turnout," he told the Observer afterwards.

"It has been a highly successful day enjoyed by record crowds in beautiful weather in beautiful Saundersfoot."
