PRESENTATION EVENING

Members of Saundersfoot Bowling Club held their end of season presentation evening last week when the success of their members was duly recognised.

Chairman and tournament organiser Paul Blayney firstly reflected on the season's main competitions held at the club, namely the Ladies' Open weekend, the Men's Open week, hosting the regional round of the Welsh Women's Bowling Association's two-wood singles event and the Rossiter Golden Charter three-wood triples, which had all been successful.

He thanked all those who had supported these events and the internal club competitions and also those who had assisted him by acting as markers and in particular Fred Rogers, who had travelled down from the Midlands to attend and who had acted as umpire throughout the season.

Chris Jenkins and Gerald were given particular praise for the excellent standard of the bowling surface and the greens committee of Alan Brace, Nev Ruff and Roy Kennion were also thanked for their contribution.

Paul then went on to congratulate those members, both male and female, who had gained particular success, including reaching and winning county competitions and representing Pembrokeshire.

Club secretary Ceris Hewlings had again played for her country in the home internationals and was wished further success for the forthcoming Atlantic Championships taking place in Cyprus and in her selection to skip for Wales next year.

Gemma Amos was congratulated for gaining her junior international cap and for her selection for next year's home internationals.

Gwenda Rees had reached the semi-final of the Welsh two-wood tournament, as had Gemma Amos, Viv Edwards, Ceris Hewlings and Ann Lewis in the rinks.

Pride of place, however, had to go to Ann, Ceris and Kath Blayney for bringing another Welsh title to the club by winning the Welsh triples, held this year in Llanelli and they will represent Wales next June in the British Isles Championships in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

Saundersfoot ladies were congratulated for winning yet another league title and Paul praised the ladies section as a whole for their ability on the green and their marvellous support in all club events.

The presentation of club trophies by president John Evans then took place, with particular mention being made to Ceris for winning three competitions, including becoming ladies club champion for the fourth consecutive year and Myrddin Dennis for reaching six finals, including becoming the men's club champion for the third time.

Sue and Colin Roden, who had organised the popular Tuesday afternoon triples throughout the season, then presented this year's winner Newton Griffiths with his trophy.

Everyone then enjoyed a splendid buffet, followed by lots of wonderful desserts that had been prepared by Kath Blayney, Diane Rigden, Mary Cavell, Sue Roden, Ann Davies, Joyce Howe and Winifred Hewlings.

The chairman thanked them for all their hard work and also George Cavell and Dai Lewis who had assisted him.

Stew Howe and Sue were thanked for running the bar, as were those who had donated raffle prizes.

Finally, Paul wished those members who were not able to attend due to illness, particularly John Moffat, better health in the future and hoped that everyone would have a good winter, whether playing indoors or just taking a break from the game.
