There's a new name on Saundersfoot Bowling Club's Men's Open Week singles trophy.

David Kingdon, of Llanelli, who bowls for Kidwelly, won the Osborne Trophy and £300 prize-money on Saturday at the second time of asking.

Last year, he was runner-up to Tenby's John Roberts, but this year he chalked up success beating teenager Steffan Harries, of Carmarthen.

Fifteen-year-old Steffan had impressed throughout the week. In the semi-final he beat the holder 21-20, but in Saturday's final, he failed to find the form he had shown in previous rounds losing 21-2.

In fact, it looked like it could have been a family affair as Steffan's brother Bedwyr also progressed to the semi-final, but he was beaten by the eventual winner 21-16.

Instead, it was the Kingdon family who won two trophies, for David's father Brian won the consolation singles cup.

Whilst the Osborne Trophy singles final was one-sided, the Poole Bowls pairs went right to the wire.

The holders, John Roberts and Lyn Guy, from Berwick, were pushed to an extra end by Brian Cole, of Harlequins BC, and Peter Toomey, of Guest Memorial BC, before they lifted the trophy for the second year running.

The finals were the culmination of another successful Open Week which had seen a high standard of bowls throughout the six days.

At the presentation ceremony, club chairman and tournament organiser, Paul Blayney thanked the competitors and spectators, Chris and Gerald, the greenkeepers, Fred Rogers, the umpire, markers, including Neville Ruff and Allen Brace who organised markers for all the games, John Austin, Roy Kennion, Neil Hensman, Brian McKehon, George Cavell and Stew Howe for manning the scoreboards on finals afternoon, Sue McKehon for taking photographs during the week and raising funds through sales of them for the club, Brian Deeley and his bar volunteers, Kath Blayney and the ladies of the club for the catering, Mike and Yvonne Llewellyn, of Absolute Bowls, who brought thier roadshow along to the club, together with those members of the committee and club who supported the event.

In response, club president John Evans thanked Paul for all his hardwork and congratulated him on a successful tournament.

Players, officials and spectators then enjoyed a buffet to round off the week.
