Atlantic Championships
Congratulations to Ceris Hewlings who has been selected to represent Wales in the Atlantic Championships in Cyprus in October.
She will be following in the footsteps of former Saundersfoot member Sarah Mansbridge who won gold and silver medals in the triples and rinks respectively when she represented Wales in the same championships in 1997.
Ceris has also been selected to play in the triples and rinks and is sent best wishes from everyone at the club for the event.
SAUNDERSFOOT 65 (2 pts.) TENBY 95 (12)
Saundersfoot played their first Pembrokeshire Division One league match of the season last Saturday when they entertained defending champions Tenby at their King George V Fields bowling green.
The villagers started well and were eight shots up after five ends, although the scores were level at the tea break.
Tenby, however, moved up a gear in the second half of the match and opened up a nine shot lead by the 15th end and then proceeded to win 16 of the 24 ends that remained across the green to win convincingly by 30 shots.
Saundersfoot did pick up two points on rink three, when John Dugmore, Brian Desmond, Alan Brain and skip Myrddin Dennis gained a nine shot win over Luke Rees, Ben Simmonds and the Guymer twins, Luke and Craig.
On rink four, John Jenkins, Neil Hensman, Don Poole and captain Simon Evans were always coming from behind against the Tenby rink of Neil Dickinson, John Baggott, Paul Diment and skip John Roberts and only winning seven ends led to a 12-shot defeat.
Rink five saw Graham Hughes, Paul Blayney and Joe and Berwyn Dennis lead their opponents Dai Spencer, Mike Jackson, Tenby captain Jon Webb and Andrew Muskett up until the 12th end, but only winning two of the last nine meant an eight shot loss.
On rink six, Roy Kennion, Nev Ruff, Shane Webster and Steve Dick started brightly enough against Cameron White, Joe Richards, Pat Currie and Peter Day and led by five shots after six ends, but only picked up four singles afterwards and eventually lost by 19.
As with the Champions League final played that evening which most of the players rushed home to see, by far the better team won on the day and the best wishes of the Saundersfoot team go to the Tenby boys for their forthcoming game in the knock-out section of the Carruthers Shield, a competition they won two years ago.
The villagers, minus for a variety of reasons six first team members on Saturday, will never the less be hoping for better things when they travel to play Milford Haven in their second league game of the season.
