Gemma's captain's day

Saundersfoot Bowling Club's ladies' captain, Gemma Amos, celebrated her Captain's Day in fine style last week.

She entertained her clubmates to a memorable afternoon and evening at the club.

Unfortunately, such was the weather that the planned game of bowls had to be called off.

Nevertheless, the ladies did manage to take to the rain-sodden green for a spider. Angela Roberts kindly donated the prize which was won by Alwen Hughes whose wood was closest to the jack.

Pink was actually the theme of the day, with all those attending asked to wear something pink.

The spider raised £45 for breast cancer, while Elsie Pendlebury had a prize for being the best dressed.

Sue Roden kept everyone entertained with a selection of games and quizzes, before a delicious meal was served, followed by some mouth-watering desserts.

All the ladies attending were given a pink buttonhole flower which they wore with pride, while the clubhouse was colourfully decorated with pink balloons.

Highlight of the afternoon was the awarding of the coveted Captain's Shield.

Gemma said she had given much thought to who should receive the shield, which is given annually to a member who the captain feels deserves special recognition.

This year, she decided that for all the support and help she has been given during her bowls career, Ann Lewis was the recipient.

Ann said she was honoured to receive the shield and congratulated Gemma on a successful season as captain and thanked her for a wonderful afternoon.

These thanks were also echoed by St. Issell's Ladies captain Sue Roden.

Gemma thanked all the ladies for their support, with special mention to her mum, dad and nan for their help during the day. A further presentation was made to Marion Evans who had stood-in for Gemma as captain when she had been unavailable.

All in all, it was a great afternoon - thanks Gem!

Saundersfoot - league champions

Saundersfoot Ladies were crowned league champions on Thursday after a close game against Tenby.

Although Saundersfoot went into their final game of the season, six points in front of second placed Tenby, if Tenby had won the match and picked up all six points, the two sides would have had to have a play-off!

That was not to be as captain Gemma Amos and her Saundersfoot girls won the match by six shots, picking up four of the six points.

During the season, Saundersfoot have won 16 games, losing four and chalking up 90 points.

Those who have played for Saundersfoot this year are: Gemma Amos, Steph Amos, Lorna Bissell, Anne Davies, Diane Disney, Viv Edwards, Anne Evans, Marion Evans, Alwen Hughes, Elsie Pendlebury, Angela Roberts, Elaine Shaw, Joyce Howe.

Saundersfoot Ladies last won the county shield in 2005, and that was the third year in succession, so fingers are already crossed that they can emulate that previous success.

Saundersfoot Ladies will now host the league presentation evening on Thursday, November 4.

SAUNDERSFOOT 100 STEWARTS AND

LLOYDS BC 120

Saundersfoot entertained tourists from the Stewarts and Lloyd Bowling Club last week in a six-rink mixed friendly and in an entertaining encounter, lost the match by 20 shots.

The visitors were from Northamptonshire, but included many expatriate Scots, which meant lots of laughter both on and off the green.

On rink one, Elsie Pendlebury, the oldest person on the green and as sprightly as ever, led for Marion Evans, with John Austin second and John Evans third, and a slow start left them six shots down after five ends.

What a difference the next five ends turned out to be, with the home four really turning on the style to score 15 shots without reply, including counts on successive ends of a five and six, to go into tea nine shots up.

The break made a difference to the visitors, who regrouped to win seven of the last 11 ends, but still left the villagers winning by two shots.

Rink two saw Angela Roberts, John Haig, Bill Glynn and skip Roy Pring lead by seven shots on 10 ends, but again the tea break took its toll and only winning three of the last 11 ends led to a five-shot defeat.

On rink three, Mike Carr skipped Frank Buckley, Colin Roden and Diane Disney to a two-shot reverse.

Scores were tied on 10 ends, but the Saundersfoot rink found themselves seven shots adrift after 15, before fighting back to reduce the deficit.

Stew Howe skipped Dennis Reed, Lyn Statters and wife Joyce on rink four and, despite taking an early lead, eventually lost by nine shots.

Rink five saw St. Issell's captain Barrie Lee skip, with Pearl Thomas, Peter Lewis and Sue Roden as his front three, but despite them winning five of the first six ends, the visitors came back strongly to win by nine shots.

Rink six saw the other Saundersfoot success, with John Bingham, Anne Evans, Lorna Bissell and skip Neil Hensman winning by three shots and just beating Marion Evans for the kitty, which is given for the top rink of the day.

Rink scores, Saundersfoot first and skips only: M. Evans 22 D. Stuart 20; R. Pring 18 M. Cargill 23; M. Carr 17 M. Patterson 19; S. Howe 15 N. Gibb 24; B. Lee 13 M. Burns 22; N. Hensman 15 W. Keeney 12.

SAUNDERSFOOT 44 THATCHEM 53

Last Friday saw the second mixed friendly of the week against the tourists from Thatchem in Newbury, but the weather had the last say in this encounter, rain forcing the match to be abandoned after 10 ends.

In what little play was possible, Barrie Lee's rink, with Brian McKehon at lead, Lyn Statters second and Brian Deeley third, came out the best, leading by four shots when the deluge proved too much for the game to continue.

SAUNDERSFOOT v SWANSEA RETIRED AND SOCIAL BOWLING CLUB

On Monday, the last friendly of the season against retired bowlers from Swansea was again a victim of the weather, with the visitors deciding that, due to the age of some of their players, despite the Saundersfoot green being in good condition and having made the journey down, the rain that had fallen in the morning meant it was prudent not to play.

So, that is it for the 2010 season, which has passed all too quickly.

As for the 15 friendly encounters on the fixture list, thanks must go to John Austin in particular for again looking after these games, with the help of club president John Evans.

Also thanks to Brian Deeley and Billy Glynn who undertook most of the bar work and the ladies who gave up their time to provide teas.

Friendly games are an essential source of income to the club, providing much-needed funds to help cover the ever-increasing running costs and a big thank you to the members who supported these fixtures.
