NEYLAND 65 (4 pts.) SAUNDERSFOOT 80 (10)

Saundersfoot travelled to Neyland for a Pembrokeshire Division one league match for what is always a tricky encounter.

The home players know their green well and many top teams have come away defeated, indeed current champions Tenby only recently managed a three-shot win there.

Fortunately, after a stormy morning, the weather cleared up and the match started in sunshine with Saundersfoot taking an early 11-shot lead after five ends.

This lead had increased to 16 shots after 10 and the second half proved to be even, with little inroads being made by the home team which eventually led to the villagers taking 10 points out of 14 in a 15-shot victory.

On rink three, John Jenkins, Peter Lewis, John Dugmore and skip Myrddin Dennis led from the off and only lost eight ends in a 14-shot win.

It was a different story on rink four where Neil Hensman, Dennis Reed, Don Poole and skip Berwyn Dennis never once led in an eight-shot defeat.

Captain Steve Dick skipping Roy Kennion, Derek Rowan and Paul Blayney on rink five also struggled and also went down by eight.

Rink six saw the best result for the villagers as Joe Dennis, Fred Rogers, Alan Brain and skip Simon Evans came away with a 17-shot win.

This was a creditable showing by the villagers who were several first team squad players short and thanks must go to Peter Lewis, Dennis Reed, Fred Rogers and Derek Rowan for stepping into the breach and acquitting themselves well and helping to ensure a Saundersfoot victory.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the villagers entertain Haverfordwest and will be looking to overturn the defeat in the reverse fixture when they narrowly lost by just three shots.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Neyland skips only):

J. Jenkins, P. Lewis, J. Dugmore, M. Dennis 25; G. Nuthall 11.

N. Hensman, D. Reed, D. Poole, B. Dennis 14; R. Evans 22.

R. Kennion, D. Rowan, P. Blayney, S. Dick 10; R. Arran 18.

J. Dennis, F. Rogers, A. Brain, S. Evans 31; B.McKay 14.

MARINERS 81 (10 pts.) ST. ISSELL'S 64 (4)

St. Issell's played Mariners of Pembroke Dock and, despite fielding a strong team, were defeated by 17 shots, only picking up four points.

The Mariners team are always a tough proposition, particularly on their own green, but to their credit, the villagers performed well after a shaky start which saw them 13 shots down after just five ends.

In quite a few games this season, a poor start has cost the team points and again here, honours were fairly even for the remainder of the match, but the damage had been done.

On rink two, Lionel Allen, Mike Carr, Keith Rowland and skip Roy Pring won 12 ends and were leading by six shots with one to play, but a dropped count of five led to a single shot win.

Newton Griffiths, Brian McKehon, Brian Deeley and Don Stokes at skip on rink three had an evening to forget, winning only seven ends and going down by 19 shots.

Rink four saw captain Barrie Lee skip John Evans, John Austin and Terry Lamkin in a six-shot defeat, while on rink five, George Cavell, Bill Glynn, Stew Howe and John Moffat chalked up a seven-shot win.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Mariners skips only):

L. Allen, M. Carr, K. Rowlands, R. Pring 17; D. Halward 16.

N. Griffiths, B. McKehon, B. Deeley, D. Stokes 12; N. Firman 31.

J. Evans, J. Austin, T. Lamkin, B. Lee 16; G. Bann 22.

G. Cavell, B. Glynn, S. Howe, J. Moffat 19; G. Thomas 12.

St. Issell's Ladies bounce back

After a disappointing trip to Neyland on Friday night, with both rinks skipped by Ceris Hewlings and Beryl Lewis being defeated, St. Issell's ladies bounced back on Saturday.

Victories by the Beryl and Ann Lewis's quartets against league champions Tenby saw St. Issell's chalk up six more points to the tally.

ST. GABRIELS 138

Saundersfoot entertained St. Gabriels, of Swansea, in a mixed friendly last week and, despite losing the match, were delighted that the visitors had enjoyed themselves so much that they had already asked to return next year.

Top rink for the villagers went to John Evans, Steph Amos, John Austin and skip Stew Howe, who won by 21 shots.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, St. Gabriels skips only):

D. Reed, P. Lewis, R. Kennion, T. Lamkin 13; K. Clement 13.

J. Evans, S. Amos, J. Austin, S. Howe 30; D.Cana 9.

D. Rowan, N. Griffiths, S. Roden, M. Carr 15; P. Cahill 25.

E. Pendlebury, B. McKehon, D. Pope, M. Evans 19; D. Payne 21.

B. Davies, C. Roden, J. Howe, B. Deeley 8; L. Bush 34.

P. Thomas, M. Oliver, B. Glynn, A. Williams 11; A. Dempster 36.
