ladies open singles tournament

Following the Open Triples event, the next day the Ladies Open Singles was due to take place, but had to be postponed after the early rounds due to the inclement weather.

Reconvening last week on a sunnier day, the Joan Osborne Cup was won by Gwenda Rees, of Saundersfoot, who defeated Sarah Mansbridge, a former Welsh international making a welcome return to the green, in the final.

The losing semi-finalists were Marion Evans and Angela Roberts, both from the host club. Gwenda also received £50 and Sarah £25, which she immediately donated to the Pembroke School Autistic Unit, a charity well supported by the Saundersfoot club.

The Joan Proctor Shield for those eliminated in the first round of the main competition, was won by Audrey Williams, of Saundersfoot, who defeated Jo Shewry, of Whitland, in the final.

Losing semi-finalists in this competition were Brenda Davies and Joyce Howe.

Tournament organiser Paul Blayney again thanked all those who had helped in supporting the whole event, in particular umpire Fred Rodgers for attending on all days.

Paul also thanked Stew Howe for his help and George Cavell, Nev Ruff, John Moffatt, John Jenkins and Alan Brace, who had all assisted as markers.

The presentations were made by Diane Rigden, this year's ladies captain of the club.

Saundersfoot travelled to North Pembrokeshire last Saturday to play Fishguard and Goodwick in a Division One fixture and gained a merited 41-shot victory.

On rink two, Don Poole, playing his first game of the season following his recent operation, led for skip Berwyn Dennis, with Alan Brace second and acting captain for the day, Paul Blayney, at number three. Leading by 10 shots at the tea break, the village rink saw the home four make a spirited comeback, with the difference only three shots after 20 ends.

The Fishguard number two Mike Barringer then ditched the jack to make a count of three, only for Paul Blayney to draw to the edge of the ditch to secure the end and the points.

Rink three saw Joe Dennis, Nev Ruff, Alan Brain and skip Steve Dick tied with their opponents on 13 ends, but two counts of four in the closing stages helped them ease to a nine-shot win.

George Cavell, John Moffat, John Jenkins and Myrddin Dennis were having a tough battle with the Fishguard four skipped by Tom Jones and were pipped at the post, for the second successive game, by just one shot.

Rink five, with Roy Kennion, Terry Lamkin, Gordon Thornton and Steve Poole at skip, led the way to the overall win with a stunning 29-shot win.

Racing into an early lead, the Saundersfoot four restricted their opponents to winning five ends of one shot in a superb display.

st. issell's 83 (10 pts) FIVE ARCHES 77 (4)

Entertaining near rivals Five Arches of Tenby last Saturday in a Division Two encounter was always going to be a tough match for the villagers, with their opponents sitting near the top of the league and one of the favourites for promotion.

Having narrowly lost a couple of games by just a few shots, however, confidence in the home camp was much in evidence and a narrow victory by six shots was their reward.

On rink three, captain and skip Stew Howe with Lionel Allen at lead, Dennis Reed second and John Austin third, led the way with a 13-shot win over Jonathan Hubbard.

Rink four saw Geoff Spiller, Newton Griffiths, Roy Pring and Keith Rowlands tying on 20 ends with Lee Richards, but it was the visitors who took a single shot on the last end to win the two points.

Brian Deeley, Don Pope, Bill Glynn and Fred Rogers on rink five struggled against the experienced Five Arches four of Ron Hurlow, Tony Powling, Gwyn Beynon and Roy Powling and went down by 11 shots.

Rink six saw the other home win, with Derek Rowen, Bob Wood, Don Stokes and Mike Carr defeating Tony Brown by five shots.

An excellent win for the St. Issell's boys, which will stand them in good stead for the matches that lie ahead.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Five Arches skips only):

L. Allen, D. Reed, J. Austin, S. Howe 28; J. Hubbard 15.

G. Spiller, N. Griffiths, R. Pring, K. Rowlands 15; L. Richards 16.

Saundersfoot entertained the Borough of Croydon touring team last Sunday and on a perfect day for bowls lost by 10 shots.

On rink one, Dennis Reed, Bob Wood, John Austin and Stew Howe always struggled to stay in contention with the visitors and eventually lot by six shots.

On rink three, Pat Patel, Gwynfor Davies, Bill Glynn and skip Paul Blayney were eight shots down at one stage, but won the last six ends to register a two-shot win.

Derek Rowen, Mike Oliver, Joe Dennis and captain for the day Nev Ruff lost by just two shots on rink four, while Frank Buckley, Dave Williams, Fred Rodgers and skip Steve Dick edged home by the same margin on rink five.

On rink six, John Bingham, Brian McKeton, Brian Deeley and Terry Lamkin were four shots down entering the last end, but to their delight, registered a count of five to win by the narrowest of margins.

st. issell's ladies

Three matches last week for the St. Issell's girls, with a mixed bag of results.

At home to Cleddau, they suffered a nine-and-a-half shot defeat.

Sue Roden, Kath Blayney and Beryl Lewis, playing a triples, drew with Ann Thomas 18-all, but losing 25 per cent of their score meant a four-and-a-half shot defeat.

Pearl Thomas, Lyn Statters, Diane Rigden and Audrey Williams lost to Wyn Howells by just five shots.

No points from this game then, but things improved later in the week with wins over Pendine away and Fishguard at home.

Against Pendine, Pearl Thomas, Sue Roden, Amanda Lewis and Beryl Lewis defeated Ann Stewart's rink by 10 shots, while Lyn Statters, Brenda Davies, Diane Rigden and Audrey Williams lost by just one shot.

Playing Fishguard and Goodwick at home last Saturday, Gwenda Rees, Mary Cavell, Diane Rigden and Audrey Williams suffered an eight-shot defeat, but Shirley Spiller, Lyn Statters, Kath Blayney and Beryl Lewis won by nine to give St. Issell's a one shot victory.

Four points out of six in both these games was a good return and keeps them in the top half of the table.
