SAUNDERsFOOT 94 (13 pts.) FISHGUARD AND GOODWICK 57 (1)

Saundersfoot defeated their opponents from North Pembrokeshire by 37 shots in their second league game of the season.

On rink three, Roy Kennion, Bill Glyn, Terry Lamkin and John Moffat drew with the Fishguard rink skipped by Tom Jones. Although winning 13 of the 21 ends, counts of three and seven on successive ends to the visitors proved crucial and overall a draw was a fair result.

On rink four, Joe Dennis, Nev Ruff, Alan Brain and skip Steve Dick raced into a early lead and restricted their opponents to winning just six ends in a 24-shot victory.

Rink five saw Brian Deeley, Don Stokes, Alan Brace and John Jenkins always in front, ending with a nine-shot win.

Geoff Spillar, Mike Carr, Roy Pring and Myrddin Dennis had a tight game against the Ray Thomas four winning by just four shots.

This was an excellent win by the Seasiders, who were missing four first team regulars, but their replacements played well and 13 points against the newly-promoted Fishguard was very pleasing.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Fishguard skips only) were:

R. Kennion, B. Glyn, T. Lamkin, J. Moffat 18; T. Jones 18.

J. Dennis, N. Ruff, A. Brain, J. Dick 32; D. Hughes 12.

B. Deeley, D. Stokes, A. Brace, J. Jenkins 21; T. Evans 12.

G. Spillar, M. Carr, R. Pring, M. Dennis 23; R. Thomas 19.

SAUNDERSFOOT 75 (12 pts.) HAVERFORDWEST

CASTLE 62 (2)

Saundersfoot continued their winning start to their Division One campaign with a 13-shot win away to Haverfordwest Castle last Sunday.

Nine shots down at tea and still two shots adrift on 18 ends, a late rally by the 'Foot bowlers turned the game around with the Seasiders picking up 12 of the 14 points at stake.

Each rink scored on the last end, picking up 10 shots in total, with the rink skipped by Steve Dick, with Joe Dennis at lead, Nev Ruff at number two and Alan Brain third doing particularly well as they were two shots down, but picked up a count of four to reverse that advantage in their favour.

This result gives Saundersfoot three wins out of three, including two away wins - an excellent start to their season.

Tomorrow, they have a home game against current league champions Tenby at 2 pm.

Last season, the villagers inflicted Tenby's only defeat of their league campaign and will be hoping for a good result here as well.

This fixture is always a tense affair between these two great rivals as to date, since the turn of the century, Saundersfoot have won the County Shield four times to Tenby's three and an interesting tussle is in prospect.

St. Issell's Ladies 55

Whitland Ladies 26

St. Issell's Ladies chalked up a 29-shot win at home against 2007 league winners, Whitland, on Saturday.

And in doing so, they picked up their first maximum haul of six points this season.

Stand-in captain Beryl Lewis and her rink of Chris Haley, Amanda Lewis and Beryl Lawrence led the charge. They only allowed their opponents - skipped by Rebecca Thomas - to score on five ends as they cruised to a 33-9 victory.

Welsh international Ann Lewis and her rink of Shirley Spiller, Brenda Davies and fellow Welsh team-mate Ceris Hewlings had a super finish against Welsh junior skip and Whitland captain Hannah Thomas. Some would say the last few end were possibly more exciting than the Eurovision song contest!

Ann and her girls were six down with only four ends to go. But they dug deep and clawed their way back into the game, not only picking up a six in one end to draw level, but going on to score on each of the remaining three ends to win 22-17.

Torquay TOUR

Twelve members of Saundersfoot Bowling Club, accompanied by members of other clubs in the county, travelled to Torquay last week on John and Gloria Dugmore's annual tour.

The party included three past men's county presidents in John Dugmore, Arwel Edwards, of Pendine, and John Jones, of Haverfordwest, and several past lady county presidents, including Gloria Dugmore. Also present were immediate past president of the Welsh Women's Bowling Association Julia King Thomas, of Tenby, and 1996 national president, Mary Cavell, together with this year's lady president of the West Wales Ladies Bowling Association, Audrey Owens, from Tenby.

Six games were played against Newton Abbot, Paignton, Babbacombe and the three Torquay clubs, with four victories being gained and two defeats.

With guest captains every day in Paul Blayney, of Saundersfoot, Steve James, of Pembroke Dock, Dave King Thomas, of Pendine and Tenby, John Jones, of Haverfordwest, Arwel Edwards, of Pendine and John Dugmore, of Saundersfoot.

Each captain imposed daily fines for various misdemeanour, some actual and some fictional! By the end of the week, a total of £115 had been raised which will be given in equal parts to the 'Help the Heroes' charity and the Kidney Transplant Unit at the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff.

Everyone had a tour to remember and thanks must be given to John and Gloria for all their hardwork in organising the week.
