Teenager Joe Dennis was the toast of a packed clubhouse at Saundersfoot Bowling Club on Friday night when he was awarded the coveted Captain's Shield.

Rapturous applause from members and friends attending the end-of-season presentation evening certainly showed that Saundersfoot captain George Cavell and St. Issell's skipper Roy Pring's choice of recipient was well-deserved.

Receiving the shield from George was the highlight of a memorable night for 14-year-old Joe who had earlier picked up the Gwilym Jones Handicap Cup - which he lifted after beating his dad, Myrddin, in last month's final - as well as two runners-up awards - this time with his dad - for the four-wood and two-pairs.

A popular member of the Saundersfoot team, receiving the highly sought-after Captain's Shield crowned a successful season for Joe.

Winner of the Whitland Open Junior Singles and runner-up in the county Under 18s singles, Joe was also a member of the Pembrokeshire Under 25s squad who were runners-up in the Welsh double rink competition.

Off the green, Joe has always been on hand to help behind the scenes at events at the club and there have certainly been plenty of those this year as Saundersfoot has had the honour of having both the men's and ladies' county presidents in residency. Both Don Poole and Ann Lewis - who has just handed over the WWLBA reins - presented the gleaming trophies at Friday's event when there was praise too for another of the club's youngsters, Gemma Amos, who won the John Evans Rabbits Shield.

Both Joe and Gemma show great promise for the future of bowls in Saundersfoot and were wished well for their indoor season which begins tomorrow (Saturday) when they represent the West in an indoor Under 16s against their East counterparts.

Master of ceremonies, Paul Blayney, the club's chairman and competition secretary, thanked members for entering the club competitions, while Don and Ann thanked everyone for all their support and hard-work during the season.

Following the trophy presentation, a delicious buffet, prepared by the ladies, rounded off a happy and successful season at the club.

More pictures of the presentations will appear in future weeks.
