Saundersfoot Bowling Club's annual men's open tournament starts on Sunday. Tournament secretary Paul Blayney has been busy working out the schedule of play for the event which will see bowlers from not only Pembrokeshire, but all over Wales and beyond compete in the Osborne Trophy Singles and Poole Bowl Pairs. Defending singles champion John Roberts, now of Tenby, plays Cliff Hyde, of Carmarthen, in the first round, while pairs holders, tournament regulars Tom Daniel and Daniel Davies, of Beaufort, face Saundersfoot's own Steve Dick and Neville Ruff. The draw has also thrown-up several other interesting clashes, with former winners drawn against each other in the opening round, with current Pembroke County president Don Poole and Macky Brace playing father and son, Brian and David Kingdon. Prize money for the singles is £300 for the winner and £100 for the runner-up and £150 each for the winners of the pairs and £75 each for the runners- up. For competitors eliminated from both main events in the early rounds, there's also the Saundersfoot Sports and Social Club Shield contest which has prize money of £40 for the winner and £15 for the runner-up. Games begin on Sunday at 12 noon and there will be matches every day next week, plus evening sessions, all leading to the finals on Saturday, August 2, so there will be always plenty of action for spectators. Lunches and refreshments will be served every day, plus there will be plenty of liquid refreshment available at the bar.
