The annual Saundersfoot Ladies' Open Tournament took place last weekend in glorious June sunshine. On Friday, 57 ladies from Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire played a round robin two wood triples in four groups with the group winners proceeding into the semi-finals. In the first semi-final, last year's winners Lorna Bissell, Anne Davies and Marion Evans, of Saundersfoot, defeated Edna Bowen, Wynne Lowe and Maureen Herbert, of Carmarthen, by two shots, while in the other semi-final, the 2006 winners Joan Nolan, Jo Shewry and Cally Jones, of Whitland, won through against Saundersfoot's Kath Blayney, Viv Edwards and Gloria Dugmore, but only after an extra end - the scores being tied on 10 shots each after normal play. The final was, as expected, a closely-fought affair with the scores tied going into the last end, but it was the Whitland trio who got the all-important shot to win the Kath and Paul Blayney Trophy for the second time and receive the shield and winning monies, plus mementoes, from Kath. On Saturday, the Open Singles took place and after four rounds of excellent bowling, Kath Blayney and Gwenda Rees, both of Saundersfoot, reached the final, with Kath running out the winner of the Joan Osbourne Cup. First round losers played for the Joan Proctor Shield, and in this all Saundersfoot final, Joyce Waters defeated Anne Evans. Following the singles finals, tournament organiser Paul Blayney thanked the ladies in the kitchen, the participants and markers and other members of the club for their assistance over the two days, before introducing this year's West Wales Ladies Bowling Association president Ann Lewis to perform the presentations. Ann also thanked everyone and made a special presentation to Paul for his efficient running of the tournament.
