Saundersfoot Bowling Club held its annual club finals at the weekend. There was a high standard of bowling as the gleaming silverware was eagerly contested. Welsh international John Roberts had the most successful weekend, winning all five events he was involved in. John, who had recently been part of an eight-strong Welsh team to beat England in a Test Match in Llandrindod Wells, was crowned club champion after beating club chairman and competition secretary, Paul Blayney. John also lifted the men's handicap cup, four-wood pairs with Mike Jackson, triples with Macky Brace and Dave Poole and mixed pairs with Ceris Hewlings. The men's two-wood singles was won by Steve Dick, who just pipped John Jenkins in a thrilling 21 -20 encounter. John won the over 60s singles, while the over 60s pairs was won by Alan Brace and Roy Pring. The two-wood pairs went to Geoff Spiller and Phil Carpenter, while the men's rabbits was won by 13-year-old Joe Dennis. In the ladies' competitions, Viv Edwards won the blue riband championship singles for the first time, while runner-up Ceris Hewlings retained the two- wood singles cup. Club secretary Marion Evans gained 'sweet revenge' against club captain Kath Blayney in the handicap in a re-run of the 2006 final, while Gwenda Rees and Welsh international Ann Lewis won the four-wood pairs. Ann also teamed up with Chris Haley and Brian Deeley to win the mixed triples, while Paul Blayney and John Dugmore lifted the Jubilee pairs. The trophies and commemorative glasses (with the exception of the ladies' two-wood singles, presented by the donor, George Cavell) were presented on Sunday evening by club president John Evans, following a delicious roast dinner cooked by Ann Lewis and her helpers. MC Paul Blayney thanked Ann and her team for preparing a delicious meal, Brian and his helpers behind the bar, as well as the competitors and markers. A vote of thanks to Paul for his hard work in organising all the club's tournaments and events was proposed by vice-chairman Ann Lewis. Following the presentations, Paul called upon club captain Geoff Vigus to present the Captain's Shield. Geoff began by thanking the members who had supported the club this year and thanked those who had only missed one or two friendlies, namely John Austin, Peter and Lorna Bissell, Steve Dick, Mike Carr, Roy Pring, Keith Rowlands, Lyn Statters, Sue Roden, Pearl Thomas, Audrey Williams, Kay Kennion, as well as those who had turned out sometimes at short notice. Geoff also thanked Gwynfor Davies for all his work, as well as all the tea ladies and Brian and the bar helpers. He then moved on to the presentation of the shield. Said Geoff: "There were several contenders; John Roberts for his exploits, Mike Carr for his help with the bar, garden and decorating work, John Austin for his help at every game, Brian Deeley who has continued to put in the effort that gave him the shield last year. "This year, for his work with the juniors, garden and general club help, keeping St. Issell's afloat and for his huge support to me, I give the Captain's Shield to Neville Ruff." Club president John Evans added his own thanks to everyone involved in a successful weekend. Finals weekend results were as follows:
