Weston Tour
A number of bowlers from Saundersfoot joined with others from around the county for the West Wales Ladies Bowling Association's president Joyce Navas's tour to Weston-super-Mare last weekend. The tour was once again successfully organised by Gloria Dugmore, of Saundersfoot, with great camaraderie and laughter from beginning to end. Games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday were all keenly contested, with the match on Sunday being held at the home club of world famous bowler David Bryant! Everyone is now looking forward to next year's tour when president-elect, Saundersfoot's Ann Lewis, and the girls will be off to Hereford. St. Issells 70 (12 pts.) Borderers 54 (2)
For their final game of a rain-interrupted season, St. Issell's welcomed Borderers to Saundersfoot for a division two match on a lovely evening. Due to it being dark by 9 pm, it was agreed that only 18 ends should be played. On rink two, a flying start by the home rink of Newton Griffiths, Ron Brabon, Barry Lee and skip John Evans saw them move into a comfortable 17 shots to 12 lead with only three ends remaining, but by losing those ends, they eventually ended up 19 shots to 17 down. On rink three, bowling good woods from the start, the St. Issell's rink of Don Pope, Mike Carr, Keith Rowlands and skip Les Davies took a commanding lead and, despite a slight hiccup over the last few ends, they ran out deserving winners 17 shots to nine. There was a much closer game on rink four, with the St. Issell's rink of Geof Vigus, Dave Williams, Pete Bissell and skip Roy Pring never more than two shots in the lead, and it was only over the last few ends that they managed to pull clear and record a good win, 13 shots to nine. On rink five, the old adage, 'Do not count your chickens', certainly applied to the game. Eighteen shots to nine up with only five ends to play, the home rink of Gwynfor Davies, John Austin, Nev Ruff and skip Steve Dick had to go up a gear to finally edge home 23 shots to 17. This has been a difficult season for St. Issell's, but all the players have given of their best and made sure every fixture was completed, and for that they are to be congratulated. They will be back next year, determined to do better.
