Saundersfoot bowler John Roberts was celebrating on Saturday after winning the main singles event in the club's Open Week. Thirty-three-year-old Welsh International Roberts lifted the the Osborne Trophy and collected £300 prize money after beating fellow club-mate Gareth Hughes in the final. Roberts raced into a 10-2 lead, but then Hughes, who has just returned from spending nine months travelling in Australia, picked up eight shots without reply to level the match. Roberts however stepped up a gear on the next end scoring a maximum four, and from then on, he never gave his opponent much of a look in. Although 23-year-old Hughes snatched two singles and a double, it was not enough as Roberts chalked up consecutive threes on the way to his 21-14 victory. In the semi-final, Roberts edged out four times winner Simon Evans who has returned to the game this year after a number of years absence, while Hughes saw off the challenge of tournament organiser, Paul Blayney. Roberts was however foiled in his bid to do 'the double'. In the Poole Bowl Pairs, he and partner Lyn Guy, of Berwick, who were last year's runners-up were beaten on the last end of the semi-final by Saundersfoot's Geoff Spiller and Berwyn Dennis. Berwyn was called in as sub for David Poole and, although not having played for some years, he quickly found his line and length. In the final, Spiller and Dave Poole were up against 17-year-old Daniel Davies and his grandfather, tournament regular, Tom Daniel, of Beaufort. And what a close match it turned out to be. It went right to the wire. On the 21st end, the score was level 17-all. The game then had to go to an extra end and a superb last bowl from the teenager edged out their opponents shot wood to clinch victory for the visitors. This was their second success in the event. They won it five years ago when Davies, then only 12, entered it with his grandfather for the first time. Daniel and Davies reached the final with a 28-15 defeat of Colin Smith, of Caerleon, and last year's Osborne Trophy winner, Dilwyn Jones, of Skewen. The Saundersfoot Sports and Social Club Shield for those eliminated of the main singles in the early rounds was won by 15-year-old Thomas Holmes, of Carmarthen, who beat Colin Smith, of Caerleon, 21-15. The Osborne Trophy and Poole Bowl were presented by Tom Osborne. Runner-up of the Osborne Trophy, Gareth Hughes, received £100, while the Poole Bowl Pairs winners picked up £150 each and the runners-up £75 each. Losing semi-finalists in both competitions had £25 each. Treasurer of the Saundersfoot Sports and Social Club, Harry Smith, made that presentation following the final which was played earlier in the day. Prize money for the winner was £40, with the runner-up receiving £25. The award for the marker of the week, a bottle of whisky, went to John Austin. The whole week was hailed an 'outstanding success' by the organiser, Paul Blayney, who thanked everyone who had supported the competition. He especially thanked the players - 51 bowlers competed in the singles, with 31 pairs entering the Poole Bowl - the umpires, Ted Brutnell, Marion Evans, Tom Osborne, Alan Redman and Fred Rogers, the markers, Brian Deeley and Neville Ruff for putting out the equipment in the mornings, Brian Deeley for also marking the final, George Cavell, John Austin, Neville Ruff and Geoff Vigus for acting as board markers for the finals, Brian Deeley and his helpers behind the bar, and not forgetting Ann Lewis and her band of helpers in the kitchen who kept players and spectators well-fed during the week.
