Division One
Saundersfoot 89 (12 pts.) Milford Haven 66 (2)
Saundersfoot entertained Milford Haven on Saturday in their first league game for a number of weeks. And it was a welcome 12 points that were picked up. Dave Poole and his rink led the charge, chalking up a 36-10 victory over Dave Buchannan's foursome. Other winning rinks for the home side were skipped by Paul Blayney, who won by five against Lee Power, and Phil Carpenter, who finished four ahead of Barry Howells. The only defeat was that of captain Myrddin Dennis's rink, who lost 26-14 to Ernie Sturley. Saundersfoot are home tomorrow (Saturday) against Pembroke Dock.
Division Two
Fishguard and Goodwick 99 (14 pts) St. Issell's 53 (0) Unexpected as it was, the sun shone on a very pleasant afternoon when St. Issell's travelled to league leaders Fishguard and Goodwick on Saturday. On rink one, the St. Issell's rink of Gwynfor Davies, John Austin, Nev Ruff and skip Steve Dick had a bad start, losing seven of the first 10 ends to be 24-3 down at the interval, but then won seven of the remaining ends to finish 16-30 down. At the halfway stage, the teams were level on rink two, but then the St. Issell's rink of Newton Griffiths, John Bingham, Barry Lee and skip John Evans lost five ends on the run, before coming back to finish 17-25 down. There was a hard game on rink three for the away team of Geoff Vigus, Dave Williams, Ed Gulliver and skip Roy Pring, who could only manage to win five ends against a strong home rink, finishing 8-26 down. For St. Issell's, there was a close game on rink four, with the team of Don Pope, Keith Rowlands, Brian Deeley and skip Les Davies all playing well. They stayed with the home rink right up to the last four ends, but eventually lost 12-18.
Open Week
Sunday sees the start of Saundersfoot's Men's Open Tournament Week. There promises to be a feast of bowling every day with bowlers competing in the singles and pairs events. Dilwyn Jones, last year's Osborne Singles Trophy winner, father and son Brian and David Kingdon, Poole Bowl winners, and Peter Toomey, Saundersfoot Sports and Social Club Shield holder, will all be defending their titles. Tournament secretary Paul Blayney has posted the draw on the noticeboard and has timetabled the games so that there will be matches during the daytime and in the evening. Semi-finals of the competitions will be on Friday, with the finals on the Saturday (July 28). The ladies will be busy in the kitchen serving tasty refreshments as usual every day. On Friday, there will be entertainment in the form of a quiz night.
Captain's Day
Ladies' captain Kath Blayney will be holding her Captain's Day on Friday, August 17, commencing at 1 pm. The afternoon promises to be full of fun and laughter with a game of bowls thrown in too! There will also be a meal following the game. The theme is Ascot Ladies' Day and there will be a prize for the lady with the best hat. A notice will be displayed at the club from this weekend for lady members to sign their name if they wish to attend.
