It all happened on the afternoon of Sunday, July 8. Federer won the men's singles at Wimbledon, Raikkonen won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, McEwen won the first stage of the Tour de France at Canterbury and the icing on the cake was Billy Lewis, from Milford Haven, winning the Saundersfoot Junior Open! It all started at 10 am, at Saundersfoot Bowling Club, where 15 under 15 hopefuls prepared for battle. There were mums, dads, other family members and holidaymakers there to cheer them on. There were cooked meals, cakes and hot and cold drinks available all day to keep the competitors and spectators fighting fit! Firstly, a round robin was played to reduce the number down to eight for the quarter-finals. This was completed by lunch and after a break, the quarter-finals were played. In four very hard fought seven-end games, where only two shots difference decided the final outcome, the semi- finalists emerged: Ysie White to play Liam Price and Billy Lewis to play Cameron White. Once again, the games were well-fought, with Liam and Billy coming out the eventual winners, 9-7 and 7-4, respectively. So to the final and runners-up games. Firstly, the runners-up, Ysie versus Cameron. It was an excellent game, where sister Ysie gave her younger brother - yes siblings - no quarter! Next year, Cameron, maybe your turn? The final between Liam and Billy was a great game, with plenty of entertainment. With the score 8-6 to Billy on the eighth end, Billy was holding three; Liam fired with 'a lot' of weight (must be a Whitland player!) and sent the jack flying onto another rink. Another chance for Liam? However, it was not to be and the eventual, well-deserving winner was Billy, 10-6. Once again, it has to be said that the standard of play of these under 15s is a credit to them, their coaches and their clubs, and as always, their behaviour was exemplary. It was now time for the presentation, which was performed by Saundersfoot president, John Evans. Ysie and Cameron were presented with their envelopes and then Liam with his heavier runners- up envelope! The winner's cup and envelope were then presented to the winner of the day, Billy. Well done Billy!
