SCHOOLS COACHING PROGRAMME
For the past four weeks, the coaches at the club have been coaching the pupils of Class Five from Saundersfoot CP School. This is now the third year of the schools programme, and again the youngsters have enjoyed every minute of it. It has proved so popular this year, that extra coaching sessions are now being held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. About 20 of the pupils from the school have expressed an interest in taking the coaching a stage further, which increases the junior section at the club to probably one of the biggest in the area. At the close of the four week programme, the children were presented with certificates recognising their attendance. On the last day the children surprised the coaching staff, by presenting them with a beautiful rose bush, and card signed by all the children who had taken part. For once the coaches were struck dumb. The bush will be planted and a plaque engraved to show everyone the lovely gesture. The children's enthusiasm, manners and willingness to listen and learn made this year's programme the most enjoyable of all.
JUNIOR OPEN SINGLES COMPETITION
If you are looking for something to do this Sunday, you could do worse than take a walk down to the Saundersfoot bowling green, where you will be able to watch 20 or so youngsters, all under the age of 15, showing their skills. For the first time ever, the club is running a junior singles competition. A beautiful trophy has been donated by two of the members, while prize money has also been donated by members. Proceedings will commence at 10 am and continue until the final is played at about 3 pm. Meals will be available all day and the club bar will also be open, so why not pop along and watch the best of the juniors in the Pembrokeshire area display their skills. It is hoped that the Saundersfoot club members will not only come along and support this venture, but that members will offer their services as markers for the games. Anyone who is able to carry out the duties of marker for the day is asked to contact Dave Robb, or add their name to the sheet displayed on the noticeboards in the club foyer. These youngsters are going to be the backbone of bowling in the future. Please help by coming along, supporting the kids, and, if at all possible, give some time to act as a marker.
saundersfoot 93 DUCHESS OF KENT TOURERS 122
It was nearly 25 years ago that this club last came to the area, and a couple of the players with the club this time were here back then. And what's more, this team are no slouches on the green either, with a couple of the members being English trialists. But their main aim was enjoyment. What a cracking bunch of people, one of the most enjoyable touring teams ever to visit the area. There was some brilliant bowling, but laughter abounded all through the game. Unfortunately, the home team found themselves a man short. Without hesitation one of the visiting players borrowed woods and stepped into the breach. A smashing day, a great crowd, and as they say in Scotland, 'Haste ye back'. Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, visiting skips only): D. Pope, Tony, B. Jones, D. Robb 21; S. Savage 14. G. Cavell, G. Vigus, S. Arris, J. Moffat 12; K. Woodgate 18. D. Stokes, B. Deeley, S. Dick, P. Blayney 24; T. Lodwick 16. J. Bingham, M. Carr, G. Phillips, G. Spiller 12; B. Bethel 29. P. Lewis, T. Shaw, P. Bissell, M. Gouldingay 10; D. Tatersfield 27. J. Evans, J. Austen, R. Kennion, J. Jenkins 14; W. Norris 18.
SAUNDERSFOOT LADIES 47 PEMBROKE DOCK PARK 26
Making her first appearance this year in the league team, Dana Rogers settled in well and played some cracking woods, which fully justified her selection. Unfortunately, school commitments tend to deter the girls getting many games, but on this showing, they certainly will not let any team down, if selected. The 'Foot ladies are riding high at the moment, and although slower out of the blocks on this occasion, they soon settled into their stride and at the end were comfortable winners. Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Pembroke Dock Park skips only): D. Rogers, A. Davies, K. Kennion, L. Bissell 24; K. Cole 13. E. Pendlebury, J. Lee, V. Edwards, M. Evans 23; D. Davies 13.
WHEATSHEAF 97 SAUNDERSFOOT 89
This annual fixture is always a joy to take part in. Started way back in 1979, or thereabouts, it is not just a game of bowls, but a meeting of friends. Unfortunately this year, owing to lack of support, Saundersfoot could only turn out five rinks instead of the usual six, and after 10 ends it looked like captain Steve Dick would be polishing the challenge shield for the next year. But as happens on numerous occasions, after tea the losing team got their act together and made a come back, and at the finish it was the captain of the Wheatsheaf who was buying the tin of polish - although only be eight shots. The game was played as usual in the best of spirits, plenty of laughter and some great bowls. The one factor that caused problems to all the players was the relentless sun beating down on them. Goodness knows what the temperature was on the green, but it certainly felt like playing in the Sahara Desert. Great fun and smashing company.
SPORTSMAN SUPREME
Young Sam Anderson donned his other sporting hat last Friday and took off to play in the Welsh finals of the British Heart Foundation Junior Singles Golf Tournament at Builth Wells. Playing some amazing golf, Sam acquitted himself well, unfortunately just missing out on the final two who will now go forward to the finals at the Belfrey later in the year. Sam is so far managing to juggle his love of both bowls and golf, but if he keeps improving in both sports, he will have the chance, I am sure, of making an even bigger name for himself in the sporting field.
