The leagues are completed and put to bed for the season, the club competitions are decided and the trophies gratefully accepted, but there is still a spark of life yet in the club, with friendlies still to be played. A couple were played last week and thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part.
SAUNDERSFOOT 103 PENHRYS PARK TOURERS 84
A number of tourers nowadays are making it a long weekend, owing to the higher costs of making tours. The visitors had three games arranged, the first at Saundersfoot. If they made as big an effort to enjoy their tour as they did in this game, they had a marvellous time. It was fun from the word go, plenty of laughter, and some cracking bowling into the bargain. Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, visiting skips only) were: M. Carr, J. Davies, N. Ruff, D. Newton 28; A. Jones 3. D. Pope, G. Davies, K. Rowland, K. Kennion 8; E. Kelland 21. B. Llewellyn, V. Ruff, R. Kennion, D. Robb 17; D. Ward 15. P. Lewis, B. Trott, T. Shaw, A. Brace 22; A. Warrow 16. E. Pendlebury, E. Gulliver, G. Spillar, P. Bissell 17; P. Kavanagh 11. L. Statters, J. Austin, S. Arris, J. Dugmore 11; M. Davies 18.
SAUNDERSFOOT 75 ELY TOURERS 55
This was a first time visit by the Ely crowd, and unfortunately they were a couple short here and there, but they managed to coerce a couple of spectators and the game got under way. The weather certainly did not help, as like most of the country it waited till the game was halfway through, before tipping it down. Once again, new friendships were formed and good company was enjoyed. Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, visiting skips only) were: G. Spillar, B. Llewellyn, K. Rowland, P. Blayney 22; R. Howells 12. J. Bingham, J. Criddle, S. Arris, T. Shaw 22; D. Hales 9. M. Carr, G. Davies, R. Pring, D. Newton 25; M. Niblett 11. S. Anderson, J. Austin, P. Bissell, N. Ruff 11; T. Rees 23.
JOHN BADHAM SHIELD
Tomorrow (Saturday), sees the running of the John Badham Singles Shield Competition. Always a popular day's bowling, where the youngsters get the opportunity to test their skills against the older members. Divided into six groups they play a round robin format with the winners going into another round robin of two groups, and at the finish both group winners slug it out for the winners prize. All in all an exhausting day, with about 45 ends being played by the eventual winners. All those who entered their names on the sheet are reminded that everything gets under way at 10 am prompt. A meal is provided during the day, with lots of tea and coffee, and if the need arises, the bar might even get opened. Dress for the day is greys and whites. Let's hope that the weather is kind to us.
JUNIOR COACHING
All juniors are reminded that the outdoor coaching is now over for the season. Last week was the last session, but don't despair, as the indoor season is upon us. Thanks again to the kindness of Hugh Davies and the family, we are starting indoor coaching at Heatherton on Sunday, October 3, at 10.30 am. It will run through until 12 noon. There will be a charge of £1 per person per session, which is nothing for a full session of coaching. It is hoped that all the juniors who took part in the outdoor programme will go along and join the indoor. If you have never tried it, you will be surprised. If you do not have your own bowls, these can be supplied. Any youngster between the ages of nine and 15 will be made more than welcome at these coaching sessions. You do not have to be a member of a bowls club, or have had any experience. If you just fancy having a go and trying it out come along, I am sure you will enjoy it.
A SAD LOSS
Once again the members of the club were shocked to learn of the passing away of another popular member of the club. Bob Griffiths for many years a fixture in the first team, sadly passed away last week after a long illness. 'Griff' as he was affectionately known was a true gentleman. Talking to some of the older members, they said that they could not remember Bob ever being miserable. He always had a smile on his face and never a bad word about anyone. He loved his game of bowls and only a matter of weeks ago was telling me that he hoped to be back on the green next season. The thoughts and sympathies of the club go out to his wife and family. He will be sadly missed.
CLUB DINNERS
Notices have been appearing on the noticeboard from the various teams organising their team dinners etc. Last Wednesday, the St. Bride's and St. Issell's players got together and enjoyed a fish and chip meal, intertwined with some 'drinkie poohs' and plenty of chatter about bowls in general. Tomorrow (Saturday) night sees the Saundersfoot team have their celebration night. Off to the Captains Table for a meal, then back to the club for some lemonades and a disco. Team captain Paul Blayney has asked me to let it be known that the disco is open to all club members. It is free, so why not get along and help them celebrate winning the county shield again. Ladies' captain Key Kennion has asked me to let the girls know that once again if enough ladies are interested, the ladies section will be heading out for an evening meal and some fun. It seems last year they all went to the Mulberry and a great time was had by all. Kay has put a list on the board, and asks that those interested add their names to it. At the moment no time or venue has been decided, although suggestions that they go back to the Mulberry for a Christmas type dinner round about the end of November/early December seems to be popular. Anyone with other ideas is asked to let her know. So there you have it folks, everyone seems intent on celebrating another great year for the club. You have the details, it is all up to you now.
