It has been some considerable time since Pembrokeshire had anything to shout about in the bowls field, certainly indoors has been crying out for something or someone to give it a lift. I remember a few years ago Paul Diment reaching the quarter-finals of the Welsh, and before that Gareth Williams (remember him), but since then we seem to have been missing out.

Well all that has gone. John Roberts has revitalised the area with his outstanding performances this season. Get your diaries out now and make a note, Monday, February 9, sees John head off to Llanelli to play in the semi-finals against international Jason Greenslade.

This game is being played on the first day of the Welsh Masters, which is also being televised. With a bit of luck, John will get to the televised stage by beating Jason and playing in the final, the winner of which goes into the Masters, and could be drawn against any of the bigger named stars. Wouldn't it be magic if John could do the business.

To try and help him along, how about Pembrokeshire getting behind him and going along to Llanelli to support him. Please leave your air horns behind, just be there so that when John walks out on the portable rink he will see plenty of friendly faces all rooting for him.

If you have only ever watched bowls on television and thought it would be nice to be present, now is your chance, and to make it more enjoyable, it is one of our own taking part. Let's give John our full backing folks.

QUICK ON THE TRIGGER

One thing you will never be able to accuse Mike Gouldingay of, is being slow off the mark. Once again this year he has been busy on his computer (nothing new there either then). Already he has been down to the club and put the sheets on the board for all the club competitions. Now, I can already hear the comments about it being too early etc., but as in previous years, there will always be the ones who think they have plenty of time, and then before they realise it, the sheets are down, and all the draws have been made.

Mike had the sheets up early last year also, and I know of at least two members who reckoned that they forgot.

Now you have no excuse, take your time and wander down to the pavilion one of these days, stick your name on the sheets, and then you can sit back knowing that you are entered.

By the way, a special plea to the ladies of the club - this year the junior girls in the club will hopefully be able to play in the club competitions. I wonder if any of you would be willing to take one of the girls in with you to play in the ladies pairs. I promise you will not be disappointed. I would have no hesitation in recommending any of the girls. Likewise, any of you gents who have not got a partner for any of the competitions, why not give one of the juniors the chance. If you get in touch, I will give you details.

WHIST EVENING

Another very enjoyable night of whist in pleasant company. Top of the tree with highest score was Joyce Waters, keeping the ladies to the fore was Rene Baggot as first lady and her support in second place was Gladys Cleaton. Doing the honours for the menfolk was,Frank Buckley as first gent, his second place rival was William Thomas. The highest score in the first half was won by Steve Dick and the second half winner was John Austin. Trying hard to avoid getting the booby prize, but losing out was Vi Austin, while Pat Quinsee picked up the longest sitter award.

The evening raffle prizes were won by J. Austin, R. Irvine, H. Buckley and M. Robb.

100 CLUB

The draw for January was made during the whist break. First prize - V. Woof (number 45); second prize - M. Lawrence (number 41).
