YOUNGSTERS IN THE NEWS

If you happened to bump into one one the youngsters from the junior section over the past couple of days and they asked if you wanted one of their photographs, or even an autograph, it is not a case of them being funny, just the fact that an article about the junior finals day, along with a photograph appears this month, in the bowls international magazine.

As this goes all over the United Kingdom and is read by bowlers all over the place, it is quite a coup to receive this publicity.

Mind you, it is well earned, the youngsters have done the club proud this year, so I suppose a little bit of a flattery can be accepted, as long as they don't expect to receive appearance money, the next time they play for the club.

JUNIOR COACHING

Still on the youngsters, Hugh Davies has once again agreed to allow the youngsters to attend coaching sessions at Heatherton.

There will be a nominal fee of £1 per person for these sessions, which this winter will be held on a Monday night. The times will be between 4.30 pm and 6 pm.

It is hoped that as many of the junior section will make the effort to attend these sessions. Those that came along last year certainly found that it helped them when they got back out onto the outdoor circuit in the summer.

With so many of the youngsters involved in various activities, Monday nights it seems are the best bet for getting as many to attend when they have nothing else arranged.

The first of the coaching sessions will be on Monday, October 13.

Will all the juniors make sure that they bring along their own woods if they have them, for those who use the club woods, arrangements will be made for there use at the coaching sessions. Any one requiring information on the coaching is asked to contact Dave.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGS

Don't panic folks, we are not having the annual general meeting early this year, this is just in the way of a reminder. I know how busy most of you are, with such a hectic social calendar, so I have decided to give you prior warning so that you can keep the date clear of any 'wing dings' you were thinking of attending.

The ladies annual general meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 4 in the Pavilion commencing at 7 pm.

The club annual general meeting will be held a couple of weeks later on Wednesday, November 19 commencing at 7.30 pm.

Obviously these events are five or six weeks away, but now is the time to put them in your diary or on the calendar on the wall, then you cannot say, I would have come, but I had a previous engagement.

INDOOR BOWLS LEAGUES

Just a few words to say hope those of you who are entering the Heatherton Leagues this year enjoy your bowls. No doubt we will bump into each other at some time. It is always enjoyable during the winter meeting up and playing against players from other clubs, who normally you probably only meet say twice in a season. Although I gather numbers are down, hopefully we will manage to have an enjoyable winter indoors.

MANAGEMENT

MEETING

Members of the management committee are reminded that the October meeting will be held this Tuesday, October 7 commencing at 6 pm. It is hoped that all will make the effort to attend.

WHIST EVENING

The first whist of the season, and once again the 'old faithful' came along to support the evening, six-and-a-half tables was a great start. Hopefully numbers will increase as the weeks go on. T

Things don't change much though, once again Graham Brace was rolling in the money carrying on where he left off last March, as was Mable Whittaker and Enid Jones, well you know what they say, money goes to money, meanwhile the same old ones ended up as longest sitters and picking up the booby prize, oh dear it is a cruel game this whist.

Back to reality, and it was another enjoyable night, taking top honours on the opening night was Pat Quinsee, whilst Enid Jones slipped into the usual routine of first lady and her side-kick Mable Whittaker as second lady.

As mentioned before, Graham Brace was first gent and 'little Miss Dynamite' Vera Burrows was second gent. The first-half top scorer was Audrey Williams with Barry Lee the top dog in the second-half. Joyce Waters claimed the booby prize with Dave Robb the longest sitter.

The evening raffle prizes were won by surprise surprise John Austin (yes it was a bottle of plonk as usual), Joan Lee took second prize and Vera Burrows the third prize.
