The pinnacle of any bowler's career, I suppose, depends on what his or her outlook on life is. Some may say to be capped for your country, some maybe playing for their county or even their club would be their high spot. I suppose some might even say being able to bowl a wood is enough for them. As I suggested, it depends on your outlook to the game and life.
One thing that a certain bowls magazine highlights is the scoring of a 'hot shot'. How many have you scored? Actually, surprisingly enough, they are not that common, despite the fact that some bowlers are experts (always perfect bowls bowled from the bank, don't you know). Anyway, a lot of people have had one or two, some even more, but a hang of a lot of bowlers go through their 'careers' without getting one.
Last week, four of Saundersfoot's stalwarts managed to make their mark on the indoor green at Heatherton. Playing in the mixed rinks on the Wednesday, Haydn Jones, John Austin, Pearl Richards and Gwenda Rees scored their maiden hot shot. Congratulations folks. Now the next goal is to score one on the outdoor circuit to make up the set.
MANAGEMENT MEETING
Management members are reminded that the next meeting of the committee is on Wednesday, November 6, in the pavilion, starting at 6 pm. As this will be the last meeting prior to the AGM, everyone is asked to make the effort to attend.
ST. ISSELL'S
TEAM MEETING
A quick reminder to all the St. Issell's players that they are holding a team meeting on Wednesday, November 14, in the pavilion at 7 pm. This meeting includes all those who played for the team last season, and those who have indicated their desire to play for the team next season. The idea is to hopefully discuss and formulate the basis for the running of the team next season in the first division, with a squad system. It was hoped that we can come to a mutual agreement on how the team should be organised.
GOLDEN CONGRATULATIONS
Last Wednesday, Newton and Cicely Griffiths held an open day at their house to welcome friends wishing to join them in celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. I was amazed that they were that old. Not so much with Newton, but surely that young sylph-like Cicely cannot have been married 50 years? I can only assume that Newton married a child bride (always keep in with the ladies, I assure you it pays off).
ANNIVERSARY CONGRATULATIONS
Whilst not quite reaching the golden anniversary stages, another couple celebrating last weekend were John and Vi Austin. John reckons that it feels as if they have been married 100 years. I am sure he means it in the nicest possible way (he would not dare say otherwise). They still have a couple of years to go before the big five-o, and providing John watches what he says, he might just see it.
WHIST EVENING
Another Monday evening of whist and the stragglers are coming back from the 'hols', so it will soon be full house again hopefully. Unfortunately, we do not see too many of the club members turning up for the whist, which is a great pity. Not only are we raising funds for the club, but it is an enjoyable night out from the 'square box'.
Experienced and complete beginners are more than welcome on a Monday night. Whilst everyone likes to win, anyone coming along for the first time is given a warm welcome and plenty of help if required. Why not make the effort to come along? Our staunch 'outsiders' are a smashing crowd and make the effort worthwhile.
On the night we had seven-and-a-half tables running. The star of the night with the highest score was P. Quinsee. Other results were: 1st lady - K. Sutcliffe; 2nd lady - J. Waters; 1st gent - E. Sutcliffe; 2nd gent - J. Davies; first half top scorer - W. Whittaker; longest sitter - David Nichols; raffles - Dave Robb and M. Atkins.
LADIES AGM
Ladies, don't forget your section annual meeting on Tuesday, November 13, at 7 pm in the pavilion.
