Have you heard the old carrot about the bus service - you wait for long enough and then three come along at once. It has been a bit like that at Saundersfoot club this past week.

The Saundersfoot first team started it all off by beating Milford on Saturday to ensure they won the county shield. On the Sunday, while the St. Brides lads were beating Pembroke Dock B, news filtered through that the Dockers A team had beaten St. Kaths 12 points to two, which left everyone thinking that St. Issell's only needed two points from their game on the Thursday against St. Kaths to win the league.

Instead, St. Issell's captain Dave Robb was told on the Tuesday that in fact they could not be caught and were now Division Two champions.

Coupled with winning the Brewers Cup, what a wonderful year for the club.

At the time of writing, the Saundersfoot ladies team are also riding high at the top of the league and hopefully will make it a clean sweep.

All those years of waiting and it all happens at once.

Checking the records, it seems that this is the first time that a club has won the First Division, while their second team has won the Second Division and the cup. It all boils down to the club holding the biggest party ever to celebrate -details as and when.

PRIORY 20

ST. ISSELL'S LADIES 38

Amidst all the excitement, the St. Issell's ladies were still carrying on showing that they have the talent to upset many teams in the league. Despite last minute changes, on a wet and miserable day, they travelled to Harfat to take on the Priory girls, and put up a great show to win comfortably.

Rink scores (St. Issell's ladies first, Priory skips only):

L. Statters, M. Robb, S. Spillar, G. Dugmore 20; A. Thomas 8.

P. Thomas, A. Williams, A. Howells, B. Lawrence 18; J. Sedgley 12.

DIVISION TWO

ST. ISSELL'S 82 (12 pts)

ST. KATHS 66 (2)

With the league title already safe, the St. Issell's squad could have sat back and taken it easy, but the winning bug has taken effect and they went all out for the full 'Monty' of 14 points.

They missed out, with one rink going down, but with only one game left, the aim of the players now is to make sure that they win that one also.

After the game, the league shield and Brewers Cup were presented to team captain Dave Robb by the county president, Bill Jones.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first, St. Kaths skips only):

B. Deeley, D. Greaves, J. Shields, M. Brace 25; P. Harries 15.

M. Gouldingay P. Bissell, H. Jones, D. Robb 10; B. Davies 21.

D. Stokes, S. Arris, J. Evans, A. Brace 26; D. Joyce 14.

R. Kennion, D. Howells, J. Roberts, J. Moffatt 21; A. Robson 16.

CHARITY FUN NIGHT

Had you been down the club last Friday night, you may have thought you had wandered into a make-believe sort of world. All these funny dressed folk walking about the green, the likes of the two Saints 'Brides and Issell's' aka Beryl and John Lawrence, the Mother Superior aka George Cavell and a couple of sweet little girls, who turned out to be the Phillips boys.

Had the club dress code been relaxed completely? No, it was all in aid of charity, i.e. the local Cancer Research and the Tenby Lifeboat. Organised by Gloria Dugmore and Myrddyn Dennis, a cracking barbecue, along with a fancy dress roll up, followed by the downing of some liquid refreshments later.

A great night of fun and the raising of in the region of a couple of hundred pounds for well deserving charities. Well done to all who took the trouble to get dressed up and make it a smashing night.

LADY CAPTAIN'S DAY

The ladies of the club turned out last Saturday to enjoy the annual captain's day. Unfortunately, the weather did not allow for the usual round-robin game of bowls.

Instead, it was a fun games afternoon over at the Regency Sun Room, while the menfolk prepared the meal. Well really some of the ladies had got everything ready earlier; all we had to do was boil the potatoes and serve, but the classy way we did it was well worth a mention.

In her speech at the after-dinner bit, captain Beryl Lewis thanked all and sundry for their help in making her year of office a success. She presented the Captain's Shield to an amazed Lyn Statters, praising her for her improved bowling over the past year.

The club presented Beryl with a basket of flowers to commemorate her year of office.

PEMBROKE DOCK A

110 (13 pts)

ST. BRIDES 61 (1)

You would think that at this stage of the season, with the trophies already decided and your team languishing at the bottom of the table, it would be nigh on impossible to motivate them into travelling to the Dock to take on their A team in a league game. But all credit to the St. Brides lads, they were queuing up to get their names down as available to play.

Those who did turn out received another lesson in bowling from the experienced A squad. I am sure that all these defeats will only serve to make the St. Brides lads all the more determined for next season.

Rink scores (St. Brides first, Pembroke Dock A skips only):

D. Williams, D. Pope, J. John, M. Dennis 11; G. Bann 29.

P. Lewis, G. Phillips, J. Tombs, M. Brewer 14; M. Gillard 25.

T. Shaw, L. Waters, G. Davies, J. Davies 22; B. Morgan 22.

C. Phillips, J. Bingham, N. Ruff, J. Lawrence 14; D. Hallward 34.

SO NEAR -

BUT NOT QUITE

Dave Roberts was nearly in touching distance of the Welsh singles title last week at Llandrindod Wells. Having already played with George Cavell in the Over 60s competition and losing, he was determined to do better in the singles.

The Welsh finals had seen the Saundersfoot club supply their fair share of finalists. Steve Poole, M. Dennis, Merv Brace and Alan Brain lost out in the rinks, leaving Dave the sole survivor. He fought his way through to the semi-final stage and was very unlucky to lose out by just a couple of shots.

Dave enjoyed the experience and no doubt will be hoping to try his luck again next year. From all of us at the club, Dave, hard lines, but well done on reaching the semis.

PEMBROKESHIRE FINANCIAL SERVICES

Remember the last social evening organised by PFS, it ended up being a marvellous night, just like the old days. Well, if you missed out and wonder what it would be like to join the rest of the members of the club, you have your chance.

PFS are holding another of their get-togethers on Wednesday, September 5, at 7.30 pm in the pavilion. For those that don't know the format, an expert on family finance will give a chat for about half-an-hour, and surprisingly it is quite interesting. You are greeted with a glass of tasty wine, there is a raffle and one of the famous Saundersfoot buffets to finish off with.

Last time that was when the fun really started, Graham Poole being the ring leader and getting the sing-song going.

So make a date folks, PFS are backing us this next five years, so we can surely repay the compliment by turning up on the night and having an enjoyable evening at the same time. Everyone is cordially invited.

CONGRATULATIONS

A winning combination of Shirley Spiller, Geoff Spiller, Nora Crocker, and Ken Taylor won their way through to the finals of Tenby's mixed triples competition.

When rain forced the final to be played at Heatherton on Saturday, Shirley, Nora and Ken were the delighted winning trio.

Yet more glory for the resurgent Saundersfoot club.
