WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

It has taken 16 long years for the first team at Saundersfoot to win the league, but certainly it was well worth waiting for.

With a display of power bowling against the strong Whitland team, the Saundersfoot lads were making sure that nothing was going to stop their run into the title. With one game left to play against Pendine, they can now sit back and enjoy the day.

All four rinks played steady from the off, and gradually took command after tea to win comfortably. So well done Saundersfoot. With the club's 40th anniversary next year, what a great birthday present.

Now all that is required is St. Issell's to complete the double by winning the second division, and the Saundersfoot ladies to win their league also. The mouth waters at the prospect.

DIVISION TWO

CASTLE 56 (2 pts)

ST. ISSELL'S (12 pts)

St. Issell's went a long way to securing the elusive second division title with this marvellous performance against Castle. The last visit in the Brewers Cup had been a narrow two-point win for the Saints, so this was a case of get stuck in and play as a team, and thankfully it worked in powerful style.

There was just the one losing rink, who had an off day, but the other three came storming home.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Castle skips only):

D. Newton, D. Greaves, J. Shields, M. Brace 31; J. Lewis 13.

D. Stokes, S. Arris, J. Evans, A. Brace 32; S. Nicholson 13.

M. Gouldingay, P. Bissell, D. Roberts, D. Robb 18; W. Hall 23.

R. Kennion, D. Howells, J. Moffatt, J. Dugmore 31; J. Jones 7.

SAUNDERSFOOT 35 LADYBIRDS 35

An honourable draw is all that the Saundersfoot Ladies could pick up from this encounter with the Ladybirds.

Joyce Waters' rink lost by just the two, whilst Marion Evans led her rink to a two-shot win, so honours shared.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Ladybirds skips only):

E. Shaw, A. Davies, L. Bissell, J. Waters 15; P. Marnar 17.

E. Pendlebury, A. Evans, M. Cummings, M. Evans 20; B. Collins 18.

ST. THOMAS 112 (14 pts)

ST. BRIDES 61 (0 pts)

You can only stand back and admire the lads from St. Brides, they turn out every week, take a beating on the green, and turn up the next game still smiling.

There is no doubt that the experience will stand them in good stead for next season, when it will be all out for betterment.

Rink scores (St. Brides first, St. Thomas skips only):

G. James, G. Phillips, C. Thomas, M. Brewer 15; W. George 31.

D. Williams, J. Bingham, J. Cleaver, J. Lawrence 18; D. Hughes 25.

N. Griffiths, L. Waters, N. Ruff, M. Dennis 14; R. Harries 21.

T. Shaw, T. James, J. John, G. Davies 14; P. 'Bus' Jenkins 35.

LADIES SECTION MEETING

All lady members of the club are asked to have a quick look at their diaries for next Monday, August 20. If you find yourself free round about 7 pm, how about going along to the pavilion and attending a meeting of the ladies section of the club.

The section is a vital part of the club; the ladies not only supply us with food during open week, but are always there to make sure that the tea and biscuits are available for the league games.

Unbeknown to some, they also help to raise much needed funds for the club, through various schemes. The club would be lost without the input from the ladies section, so all lady members are asked to attend this meeting.

CLUB PRESIDENT'S TOUR 2002

Everything has been booked for the tour next year. John has been a busy little fellow, making sure that things are all 'just so.' The hotel and coach company have been booked and now require their deposits.

Now John was tempted to break into his piggy bank and pay these himself. But Gloria slapped his wrist and sent him to bed. That is where those people who have indicated their wish to go on the tour come into their own.

All deposits are now required ASAP. You will remember it is £50 per person, and cheques should be made payable to J. Dugmore, President's Tour 2002. Please arrange to get your deposits to John soonest.

WELL DONE GIRLS

The Saundersfoot ladies who travelled to Tenby last Saturday to take part in the county finals did the club proud by winning four trophies, with a number of the runners-up coming from the club also.

Anne Evans won the Autumn Cup, defeating clubmate Audrey Williams; Viv Edwards beat clubmate Shirley Spiller to win the singles, while Thelma Mearns and Viv Edwards combined to beat Ann Lewis and Gwenda Rees in the pairs final. The rinks trophy was won by the team of Anne Davies, Alma Howells, Shirley Spiller and Beryl Lewis.

A great show ladies, we are all proud of you at Saundersfoot.

ST BRIDES 98 (12 pts) PEMBROKE

DOCK B 59 (2 pts)

There must be something in the water down at Saundersfoot these days. Just ask the Dock's Steve James, who came off demanding a test for steroids on some of the 'older' St. Brides players, who had just run his troops ragged.

Bert Berry, Jack John and John Lawrence have all had their bus passes for some years, yet they played like two-year-olds.

Likewise, the new boys also impressed with their silky skills, in particular Tony Shaw, whose play at lead was a revelation.

Twelve points well earned lads.

Rink scores (St. Brides first, Pembroke Dock skips only):

T. Shaw, T. James, B. Berry, J. Davies 29; C. Hughes 13.

D. Williams, D. Pope, J. John, B. Griffiths 24; S. James 15.

C. Phillips. J. Bingham, J. Cleaver, J. Lawrence 21; J. Woods 22.

P. Lewis, G. Phillips, P. Sampson, M. Brewer 24; M. Young 9.

CHARITY FUN NIGHT AND BARBECUE

Members are reminded that tonight (Friday), the green is hosting a charity fun night. There will be a fun drive with hopefully everyone in fancy dress, a spider, loads of laughs, a barbecue, and much needed money raised for charity.

Tickets can be obtained from either Gloria Dugmore or Myrddyn Dennis, costing just £3.50; it is all in a good cause and hopefully there will be a good turnout.

LADIES CAPTAIN'S DAY

The green will be closed on Saturday for the Lady Captain's Day of fun and frolics. Captain Beryl Lewis is hoping that the weather will be kind, allowing her to entertain the ladies of the club with a fun afternoon of bowls followed by a slap-up meal. The menfolk take their turn in the kitchen serving up the goodies, allowing the ladies to relax for a change.
