The month of August sees the last few weeks of the outdoor bowls season. It seems like only last week it was all starting, and here we are ready to enjoy club finals day.

This month will certainly be exciting for the members of the Saundersfoot teams. The ladies team are poised ready to take top spot in the league while the gents team are riding high in the First Division with the league title theirs for the taking, providing they don't let things slip at the last moment, as they have done in the past.

The St. Issell's team are also on a crest of a wave at this time, clear leaders of the Second Division and needing just the three points from their last Brewers Cup match to win the cup too. A very exciting time indeed, and with the club celebrating its 40th anniversary next year, what way to welcome it in.

Three teams winning their respective leagues, it is no wonder that chairman Graham Poole is wandering around the various games like an expectant father. Whether he gets the chance to celebrate or not is solely in the hands of the players.

It they keep a cool head and play for each other, the club could be having the party of all parties!

ST. ISSELL'S 104 (12 pts)

ST. THOMAS 62 (2)

One of the hurdles in front of St. Issell's winning the league was the game against the strong St. Thomas team, with a couple of forced changes it was no surprise that the home team started rather nervously, but they soon settled down to their usual game and took the initiative.

The final result of 12 points was a welcome one, but with a visit to Haverfordwest as their last league game of the season, they will be hoping that they have things sewn up and packaged by that time.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first, St. Thomas skips only):

D. Stokes, H. Jones, J. Evans, A. Brace 18; P. 'Bus' Jenkins 24.

FISHGUARD 107 (14 pts)

ST. BRIDES 52 (0)

The intrepid St. Brides lads trooped off to Fishguard last week for another midweek league game and, despite losing on all four rinks, were still the same cheerful lot on the journey back home.

They may not have won many games this season, but they certainly have won lots of friends, with their fun outlook.

Rink scores (St. Brides first, Fishguard rinks only):

P. Lewis, L. Waters, J. John, J. Lawrence 20; D. Hughes 21.

N. Griffiths, C. Thomas, B. Griffiths, M. Brewer 11; M. Power 24.

PEMBROKE DOCK B 45 (0)

ST. ISSELL'S 108 (14 pts)

This was the last game for the Saints in the Brewers Cup competition, having won all previous eight games, all that was required was just three points from this game to ensure the trophy was back at Saundersfoot next season.

It can only be put down to nerves, but two of the rinks were struggling in the early stages of the game before last minute burst secured all the points.

The Dockers were a worthy adversary, and made it an exciting game.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Pembroke Dock skips only):

B. Deeley, D. Greaves, J. Shields, M. Brace 38; J. Woods 7.

D Stokes, H. Jones, J. Evans, A. Brace 19; C. Hughes 16.

M. Gouldingay, P. Bissell, J. Roberts, D. Robb 21; M. Young 13.

R. Kennion, D. Howells, J. Moffatt, J. Dugmore 30; S. James 9.

The St. Issell's team had a marvellous run in the cup, playing nine games and winning all nine. They scored a magnificent 117 points, for only 19 against, with a marvellous 361 plus points difference. A really impressive performance. It is hoped that with that trophy safely tucked away they can go on now and clinch the league title next week.

ST. BRIDES 54 (0)

ST. KATHS 92 (14)

Entertaining the St. Kaths lads from Milford, the St. Brides players could help out their fellow bowlers St. Issell's by picking up a couple of points from one of their nearest rivals. Unfortunately, it was not to be despite a couple of hard fought games.

Rink scores (St. Brides first, St. Kaths skips only):

P. Lewis, D. Popel, J. Cleaver, J. Lawrence 16; A. Robson 20.

D. Williams, J. Bingham, B. Berry, J. Davies 16; T. John 22.

N. Griffiths, L. Waters, P. Sampson, M. Brewer 6; P. Harries 28.

MANAGEMENT MEETING

There will be a management meeting on Tuesday evening in the pavilion starting at the usual time of 6 pm. Would all management committee make every effort to attend.

SAUNDERSFOOT V MILFORD HAVEN

The first team squad are certainly doing nothing to help Graham Poole's nervous system. The opening 10 ends or so saw them just manage to keep in the hunt for the league honours that they wanted so much.

At tea they either had some harsh words with each other, or someone whispered sweet nothings in their ears, however.

They began to take control of this game, and show everyone just why they are in the hunt for honours. The final count saw them come away with all 14 points, which all helped to make the after game drinks go down all the sweeter.

SAUNDERSFOOT 57

PRIORY LADIES 31

The Saundersfoot ladies have had a coupe of shaky games of late, but against Priory they picked up useful points thanks to the powerful rink led by Marion Evans, winning by 28 shots. Joyce Waters' rink looked like they were going to win, albeit narrowly, until a dropped five shot count on the last end cost them two points.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Prior Ladies skips only):

N. Crocker, C. Griffiths, V. Edwards, J. Waters 20; M. Manning 22.

K. Kennion, L. Bissell, M. Cummings, M. Evans 37; A. Thomas 9.

CLUB COMPETITIONS

Mike would like to draw to the attention of the members (those still involved in the competitions any way) that the cut off date for the current round of competitions is this Sunday, August 12. There should be no problems this round, with the fabulous weather we have been having. With the next round being the semi-final stages, you are advised to get your games in early as, at this time of year, the weather does tend to go rather haywire.

Some lucky people are in a couple of semis already, so the onus is on the players to make sure that their games are played well within the cut off date.
