It always amazes me, the first week or so after the cut-off date for any of the club competitions, and you can nigh on walk onto the green at any time, no worries, it is empty. But the last week before the cut-off date, and you cannot get near the place from first light to last, some people playing two and even three games on the last day. Now me, I think I much prefer the laid back approach, get your games in early enough, and you can afford to sit back and watch the opposition struggle. Of course, this is provided that you catch your opposite number and tie him down to playing on a specific date. I tell you, it is a tough old life being a bowler, isn't it?

NEYLAND LADIES 40
Another day and another game. Instead of 'have gun will travel', to be a bowler in Pembroke these days, it should be 'have bowls bag will travel'. The ladies of Saundersfoot, like the rest, have had a busy time of late.
Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Neyland skips only):
K. Kennion, N. Crocker, M. Cummings, M. Evans 18; M. Sanders 17.
A. Evans, L. Bissell, B. White, J. Waters 16; V. Hubbard 23.
PEMBROKE DOCK 44
SAUNDERSFOOT
LADIES 35
The wheels came off the Saundersfoot team's run of success in this game at Pembroke Dock, but panic is not quite setting in yet. This defeat will give them the time to sit back and recharge the batteries, ready for the final run in.

E. Pendlebury, C. Griffiths, M. Cummings, M. Evans 18; K. Cole 26.
J. Brewer, P. Richards, L. Bissell, J. Waters 17; B. James 18.
ST. ISSELL'S 48
FIVE ARCHES LADIES 23
Playing alongside their men namesakes, the St. Issell's Ladies went on the rampage against the strong Arches team. Perhaps the confidence exuding from the men's team carried through to them.
Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Five Arches skips only):
P. Thomas, B. Davies, M. Robb, B. Lawrence 26; C. Morgan 8.
L. Statters, M. Cavell, A. J. Lewis, B. L. Lewis 22; J. Williams 15.
DIVISION TWO
ST. ISSELL'S 121 (14 pts)
GOSCAR 40 (0)
Playing with confidence and looking relaxed, the St. Issell's players went to the races and came home as winners big time. The Goscar lads could only stand back and admire the bowling skills on display. The St. Issell's lads are playing as a team, encouraging each other's rinks, certainly team spirit is high.

PEMBROKESHIRE FINANCIAL SERVICES
When PFS say they are holding a social evening, they certainly know how to spell the word social. Last week they held a get-together in the club; it started with a chat about investing your money properly. A few of the menfolk looked slightly sick round the gills at the thought of taking their money from under the mattress.
This was followed by a marvellous buffet, supplied by PFS, but made up by our very own Ladies Section. They had supplied umpteen cases of very tasty wine into the bargain, all of which led to a club sing-song and generally enjoyable evening.
Added to the raffle supplied by PFS, I can definitely see that they will have to issue tickets to the next social night they intend having in late August.
SAUNDERSFOOT
IN BLOOM
The members were delighted to learn last week that the club had come in second in this year's Saundersfoot in Bloom contest. Those members that give of their time, money and effort to brighten up the green surrounds, deserve all the plaudits going.
I am sure even they would stay slightly in the background and allow the club's head gardener, Paul Gray, to step forward and collect the award. Paul has grafted very hard throughout the last month or so, giving the surrounds a much-needed facelift, and I am sure that his efforts helped convince the judges that this year the club deserved recognition.
The hanging baskets purchased by the club only added that final touch to the many flowers on display round the green. Everyone who puts in the effort throughout the season to keep those edges looking so smart, deserve the thanks of the members.
BACK TO BASICS
After their heroics over the past couple of games, the Saundersfoot lads found that the wheels did not exactly come off their wagon, but certainly they are wobbling a little. Against Pembroke Dock last Saturday things were really down to hard graft and teamwork. The final result saw them lose overall, but win on two out of the four rinks. The result tended to take the shine off the previous two maximum wins, but all is not yet lost, hopes are still high within the members that things will come together yet again.

OPEN WEEK
The opening day of the tournament saw some cracking bowling from the players.
Dave Roberts from the home club and Denis Bancroft served up a cracker, before Dave, the county Over 60s winner, scraped out a one shot victory.
Likewise, the 'Foot's John Evans and Ray Holly, of Five Arches, were showing the many watchers how bowls should be played. The wily old fox John Evans stuck to his guns and won by just the one.
Again the home club was represented in another stormer of a game. Alan Brace was coasting against club-mate Ken Taylor, but again it was a case of grinding out the shots to snatch victory, Ken delighted with the result.
Les Davies, of the Dock, was out bright and early against the 'Foot's Tony Cummings. A gritty performance from both saw Les take the honours.
Full listings and results next week.
