All this good weather has meant non-stop play on the green, with members taking part in the various club competitions making sure their first rounds would be completed well in advance of the cut-off date coming up this Saturday.

A couple of friendlies took place last week, with firstly members from Hirwaun club renewing acquaintances with one time member, Don Stokes.

Next day saw the return of the Parish of Caerphilly who, if lacking in bowls skills, certainly have a fun day with plenty of laughter.

This game had all the excitement you could muster. Literally the last bowl of the game saw the home team sneak a one-shot win.

Viv Edwards's rink had completed an eight-shot win and were on the bank rooting for their team-mates, who were having a titanic struggle, but the loss of six shots over the last three ends meant an overall defeat.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Fishguard skips only):

E. Pendlebury, A. Evans, L. Bissell, J. Waters 20; M. Jones 29.

A. Davies, C. Griffiths, M. Cummings, V. Edwards 24; G. McFarlane 16.

ST.ISSELL'S 76 (10)

The second visit in a week to Fishguard and the third game against each other meant that the players of both teams should know each other's play by this time. Certainly the visitors took the game to the home team, on a damp night with showers seeing the players scurrying for their wet-suits.

Macky Brace's rink saw their winning run come to an abrupt halt, while Dave Roberts's rink fought hard, only to lose out on the last end. John Dugmore's rink slipped into a higher gear after tea and ran out winners by 12 shots. Dave Robb's rink were in top form and never looked like losing their commanding lead.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Fishguard skips only):

P. Gray, D. Howells. J. Moffatt, J. Dugmore 25; J. Jones 15.

ST. BRIDES 71 (0)

Travelling to the Dock to play the A team at any time is a trial at all costs, but after the previous encounter, the St. Brides' players were probably just a wee bit worried. The result speaks for itself.

L. Waters, T. Shaw, G. Davies, J. Tombs 17; M. Gillard 25.

DRESSED TO KILL

The players from the three gents' teams were looking extremely smart last week thanks to Paul and Kath Blayney, who have sponsored the teams with new polo shirts. Not for the first time Paul's company Burberrys have stepped in with sponsorship.

With Pembrokeshire Financial Services also backing the club this year, things are definitely looking up. Along with the people who have backed the club for many years, Saundersfoot are in a steady position.

This was the second meeting of these two teams, and once again the visitors ran riot with a sound display of bowling against the youngsters of Whitland. Try as they might, the lads could not get it together enough to match the experience of St. Issell's players.

John Dugmore's rink, in particular, had a field day, romping home by a massive 43 shots.

The other three rinks won comfortably, leaving the home team, although beaten, still smiling and looking forward to their next game.

LADIES OPEN TOURNAMENT

The Saundersfoot tournament has become one of the highlights of the ladies' bowls calendar. The entries this year were once again on the increase, with some top class bowling from day one.

It is only a pity that more people don't get down to the green to watch and support the ladies. The finals on Sunday were really something else. Beryl Lewis, in particular, seemed to have been on the green from first thing. In between playing semi-finals of the pairs, she took part in the singles final.

The pairs was a real classic match between club mates Beryl Lewis and partner Alma Howells against Beryl Lawrence and Audrey Williams. It went all the way to the last end.

Tournament organiser Gloria Dugmore thanked everyone for their support, including the ladies for the catering, the bar staff and the markers, but especially the players. The presentations were carried out by Mrs. Phyllis Morris and Mrs. Barbara Tombs.

Winners were: Singles - Beryl Lewis; runner-up - M. Manning. Pairs - Beryl Lewis and Alma Howells; runners-up - Beryl Lawrence and Audrey Williams. Joan Proctor Trophy - Beryl Lawrence; runner-up - Audrey Williams.
