I am sure us husbands could tell many a tale of how the better half manages to get her own way over something or other. We always fall for it guys, don't we?
Roy Kennion is the latest to get 'the treatment'. Last Tuesday it was his turn to take the car for the game at Fishguard. Roy dutifully informs the 'Gaffer' Kay, and being a woman she suggests that perhaps the car could do with a good clean out - after all, you cannot ask people to get into a dirty car can you? (woman's logic here).
Roy gets the pail out and gets to work. Whilst he is doing that, Kay suggests the hedge needs trimming and, of course, the grass needs a cut. Oh, and don't the windows need cleaning?
We have all been there haven't we. Anything for a bit of peace.
DIVISION TWO
FISHGUARD 67 (4 pts)
ST. ISSELL'S 83 (10 pts)
Having to travel all the way to Fishguard for a game during midweek is nothing short of madness. People who work have either to get time off, or else drive like maniacs to reach the ground on time. Then, by the time the game is over and you get back, it is 11 pm.
The St. Issell's lads will be good at it by the end of the season - they were up there last Tuesday in a league game and are back again next Thursday. It would be much easier if it was at the weekend.
Still, they got to the ground in time to play and at tea found themselves down on three of the rinks. During tea, the heavens opened and at the restart the bow waves from the woods would have sunk the Titanic, but the visitors actually found it suited them better, and got back into contention. In fact, they never looked back, winning well on two rinks and losing out by just the one shot on each of the other two. This was a valuable 10-point win.
Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Fishguard skips only):
G. Cavell, D. Newton, A. Brace, M. Brace 20; T. Jones 14.
D. Stokes, D. Greaves, J. Shields, D. Roberts 24; D. Hughes 12.
R. Kennion, M. Gouldingay, J. Roberts, D. Robb 18; M. Power 19.
J. Austin, D. Howells, J. Smalley, J. Dugmore 21; K. Grace 22.
GREEN FINGERS
Now, I cannot say too much about gardening. 'Er indoors' let's me loose with the lawn mower and that is about it. I am the one who planted lettuce upside down!
But, a certain lady chairperson is supposed to be a little bit more in the know than me (so she says), but ask me who it was who planted a tomato plant in the border, saying that it was a beautiful laburnum plant, and then could not understand how the others were flowering and this one had little tomatoes.
No, I refuse to name her. Anyway, she is probably on international duty with Wales. Oops!
PEM DOCK B 92 (14 pts)
ST. BRIDES B 50 (O pts)
St. Brides travelled to Pembroke Dock last Wednesday in the vain hope of picking up a couple of points, but the Dock B team have had a year or two in the league to get the experience and are now a tough nut to crack. Certainly, any team that wins against them will know that they have had a game on their hands.
Rink scores (St. Brides first, Dockers skips only):
N. Griffiths, T. Shaw, N. Ruff, J. Lawrence 16; S. James 21.
D. Williams, S. Heap, P. Sampson, M. Brewer 17; M. Young 26.
P. Lewis, J. Bingham, J. Cleaver, J. Davies 14; J. Woods 20.
L. Allen, C. Thomas, J. John, G. Davies 3; C. Hughes 35.
LADIES LEAGUE
SAUNDERSFOOT 26 MILFORD 44
The last game between these two teams saw a close run thing, but this time the Milford ladies were on a high, as Margaret Carter's rink demolished Viv Edwards' led rink by 16 shots, whilst Saundersfoot captain Lorna Bissell's rink fought back to lose by just two shots, against Joyce Navas' led team.
Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Milford skips only):
E. Pendlebury, K. Kennion, B. Tombs, L. Bissell 17; J. Navas 19.
J. James, A. Evans, A. Davies, V. Edwards 9; M. Carter 25.
BREWERS CUP
BORDERERS 47
ST. ISSELL'S 134
It is always a pleasure playing against the Borderers. Meeting up with the crop of budding youngsters they have turning out for them is marvellous.
I know most clubs in the area would give their eye teeth to have such young stars in the making. Once they get that little bit more experience, they will be able to match the other teams in skills.
The St. Issell's lads went on the rampage, with Macky Brace's rink running riot, winning by 51 shots, and the other three rinks winning comfortably.
Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Borderers skips only):
P. Gray, D. Howells, J. Moffatt, J. Dugmore 24; D. Ford 18.
G. Cavell, D. Newton, A. Brace, M. Brace 55; D. Jenner 4.
D. Stokes, D. Greaves, J. Shields, D. Roberts 31; D. Davies 9.
R. Kennion, M. Gouldingay, J. Roberts, D. Robb 24; E. George 16.
People are getting rather worried about John Dugmore these days. A committee is being formed to go around the local jumble sales looking for any bowls shoes, white socks and even the right bias!
It seems that John's memory is going as fast as his hair. Personally I blame Gloria for neglecting her duty.
LADIES LEAGUE
SAUNDERSFOOT 44 PENDINE 37
The ladies were on a mission in this game after their previous defeat. Only a win would satisfy and they went home happy.
Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Pendine skips only):
K. Kennion, L. Bissell, M. Cummings, T. Mearns 20; B. Pickersgill 17.
E. Pendlebury, C. Griffiths, J. Waters, M. Evans 24; E. Ludwig 20.
PENDINE 32
ST. ISSELL'S 43
The St. Issell's ladies were determined to bounce back from their defeat on Thursday evening, and boy how they fought to get the right result.
With a number of their key players away with the county etc., it was again a makeshift team, so credit where it is due.
Rink scores (St Issell's first, Pendine skips only):
M. Cavell, A. Williams, M. Robb, A.J. Lewis 17; B. Pickersgill 14.
L. Statters, Y. Price, B. Lawrence, G. Dugmore 26; C. Jones 18.
SAUNDERSFOOT 52 FISHGUARD 33
The Saundersfoot ladies were determined to get back to their winning ways after some, to their standard, lacklustre displays. The unlucky ones to get the brunt of their determination were the Fishguard girls.
Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Fishguard skips only):
B. Tombs, V. Edwards, M. Cummings, T. Mearns 19; G. McFarlane 17.
A. Davies, A. Evans, J. Waters, M. Evans 32; M. Jones 16.
DIVISION TWO
ST. BRIDES 60 (2 pts)
PEM DOCK 86 (12 pts)
In the past couple of games, St. Brides have looked like a team in the wrong place at the wrong time. Just a little bit of luck and they could have been picking up some valuable point. Unfortunately, against the 'Dockers', things did not go according to plan.
Rink scores (St. Brides first, Dockers skip only):
P. Lewis, J. John, N. Ruff, J. Lawrence 18; M. Gillard 16.
T. Shaw, J. Bingham, J. Cleaver, T. Bullock 13; B. Morgan 22.
D. Williams, B. Berry, P. Sampson, M. Brewer 15; G. E. Thomas 26.
L. Waters, G. Davies, B. Duckworth, J. Davies 12; G. Bann 22.
THANKS A MILLION
Geoff and Shirley Spiller have been a Godsend since joining the club. Two or three times they have come along to watch a friendly and ended up doing the teas because someone had forgotten. Thank goodness they joined Saundersfoot.
