Saundersfoot and Tenby dominated the West Wales Ladies Bowling Association Finals Day on Saturday. Staged at Whitland, the club of this year's president, Susan Evans, the finals produced a high standard of bowling, much to the delight of the large crowd of spectators. Saundersfoot swept the board in the singles competitions. The club's Welsh international, Ann Lewis, was crowned county singles champion for the third year running after she chalked up an impressive victory over clubmate, Viv Edwards, in a re-run of last year's final. Chris Haley defeated Tenby's Alison Redman to win the two-wood singles, while Marion Evans made it a hat-tick for Saundersfoot, by beating Rene Silcox, also of Tenby, to retain the Autumn Cup. Tenby's Lynn Delabertouche and Audrey Owens joined forces to become the first ever winners of the new two-wood pairs competition. They defeated Fishguard's Betty Wilson and Gwen McFarlane. Meanwhile, the four-wood pairs was won for the third year on the trot by Gwenda Rees and Ann Lewis, who beat Alison Redman and Mair Marquiss. The triples was an all Tenby affair. Making her third appearance of the day on the Parc Dr. Owen green, it was indeed third time lucky for Alison Redman as she teamed up with Helen Baggott and Julia King Thomas to clinch victory against clubmates, Lynn Delabertouche, Audrey Owens and Rene Silcox. The rinks competition went right to the wire, with Saundersfoot's Chris Haley, Diane Rigden, Gwenda Rees and Ann Lewis going into the last end level with clubmates Kath Blayney, Amanda Lewis, Ceris Hewlings and Gloria Dugmore. There was a thrilling end to a closely fought game, with Gloria's rink just holding on, despite a valiant effort from Ann, with her last bowl, to take a three on the last end to win. As a result of her double success, Ann Lewis will also receive the coveted Victrix Ludorum award. Umpire for the day was Ted Brutnell, of Tenby. Thanks were extended to the Whitland club for hosting Finals Day and to competition secretary, Ann Gray, of Fishguard, for running the events so efficiently throughout the season.
