The following few weeks at Colby Gallery are set to be busy...busy...busy. Warren Heaton's solo exhibition finishes tomorrow (Saturday), and following him in the 'Small Gallery', starting this Sunday will be Sandra Phillips with an exciting range of watercolours, pastels and oils.
Sandra moves seamlessly from traditional watercolours through to the freedom of more impressionistic, interpretive work in pastels and oils. Her love of mood, atmosphere and light is much influenced by the changing weather patterns of Pembrokeshire's coast and hills. Since taking early retirement after 23 years teaching at Preseli School, Sandra has finally found the time to develop her lifelong interest in art.
Largely self-taught and constantly experimenting, she has won several awards, the most prestigious being winner of the landscape section of the Society for All Artists 'Artist of the Year' International Competition in 2003. Her painting of the traditional Welsh cottages at Abereiddy was also voted the people's choice in the 'Artist and Illustrator' show in London.
Sandra is currently workshops and demonstrations co-ordinator for Pembrokeshire Art Associates, with whom she also exhibits. Living in Pendine, she takes workshops and demonstrates to local art groups in both Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire and following her exhibition at Colby she will be 'Artist in Residence' at Nant y Coy for the month of June.
The first day of Sandra's exhibition at Colby coincides with the Woodland Garden's annual NGS Open Day, which always attracts bumper numbers of visitors to the gardens and gallery alike. Over the following Whit Bank Holiday weekend, Sandra will be in the gallery on Saturday and Sunday, May 24 and 25, and again on Friday, May 30, when she will be happy to demonstrate and discuss her work with the public. The exhibition runs until June 7.
Don't forget, for younger members of the family on Monday, May 26, a VIP visit is scheduled for no less a 'personage' than Rupert Bear. Children with an artistic bent are welcome to make use of sketch pad and pencil up in the gallery to draw their own impressions, however impressionistic, of this illustrious visitor.
