Sailing out of Saundersfoot harbour is now a breeze for disabled people.
It’s all thanks to the new pontoon recently constructed at the harbour, and the arrival of a new pleasure craft.
The wide deck of the catamaran, the Ebony May, means that users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters can gain easy access via the pontoon ramp.
The craft belongs to Stuart Denman, who is a member of the Saundersfoot Pleasure Boats consortium, along with Steve Hart, who operates Four Brothers and the Seal Safari craft.
“We’ve already had a couple of trips with a number of wheelchair and scooter users on board, and it was brilliant,” said Steve.
“Before we had the ramp we would literally have to carry a wheelchair down the steps to the boat, which was a bit precarious. One gentleman on a scooter was delighted, because it meant he could drive aboard and go on a fishing trip with his grandson.
“And it’s also nice for carers who can bring people along in wheelchairs who may not otherwise have had the chance to go out on the water. It’s something we’ve wanted to do properly for years, and it gives Saundersfoot yet another string to its bow.”
