Tip of The Week
Week 10, Match play golf: Over the next month, the world of golf will be over run with match play golf. Viewed as one of the most exciting formats of the game, top professionals actually play very little match play throughout their golfing careers which is why the Ryder Cup offers such a spectacle for spectators.
As there is no score to protect, you'll often see golfers attempting plays and specific shots that they wouldn't dream of hitting in stroke play golf.
This week, I want to highlight three areas to give you the edge in match play golf.
1. Play the opponent not the golf course. Many golfers get caught trying to make pars and birdies, but remember the emphasis is on beating your opposition score not the course par. Focus on matching or beating their shot count from tee to green, and taking the edge when on the putting surface.
2. Keep the ball in play (the hole is never over). All to often in match play golfers play the same shot even if their opponent has found trouble. If they hit their ball into trouble eg. out of bounds or deep rough don't proceed to launch a driver in the same place. Drop down to a rescue club or even long iron and find the middle of the fairway. You may be 20 yards back but your now in command of the hole.
3. Know the rules. Match play outcomes can often be very different to stroke play. For example a two shot penalty in a stableford competition may be loss of hole in match play. Keep your rule book handy and don't be afraid to play two balls if you and your partner cannot decide on the correct ruling. This can be rectified on returning to the pro-shop on completion of your match.
Match play can be a daunting format as it is played very little at golf clubs. Remember these three tips next time you take to the course to give you the edge over your opponent.
With Ryder Cup now only four weeks away, next week I'll be looking at the importance of caddies and shot selection.
