Sixteen-18-year-olds with good or excellent rugby ability are invited to a skills session led by WRU national skills coach Rob Appleyard at Haverfordwest Rugby Club on Monday, May 12, from 6.30 until 8 pm. Rob, who's originally from Pembrokeshire, is based with the Scarlets Regional Academy. He gained nine caps for Wales and in July 2007 was named as assistant coach to the Wales U20 national side alongside Wayne Jones. Rob also has previous experience as a defence coach with the Ospreys and also gained coaching experience with Carmarthen Quins. "This is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring rugby players to learn skills from an ex-international," said Pembrokeshire College rugby coach, Kenny Davies. "There are two parts to the event," added Kenny. "After the skills session, the players and parents will have the opportunity to find out more about joining Pembrokeshire College's Rugby Academy where students receive first-class coaching and training whilst studying on any full-time college course." Pembrokeshire College's rugby academy was designated as a local Centre of Excellence by Llanelli Scarlets in 2005 for the development of 16 -18-year-old rugby players in the county. The college's rugby academy is closely integrated with the Scarlets under-18 academy and college players are able to move into the Scarlets academy when they are ready. Successes include second-row Dominic Day and tight-head prop Simon Gardiner, who recently gained his first Welsh Under-18s cap after impressing selectors. To book your place on the skills training session with Rob Appleyard, or to find out more about joining the rugby academy, call admissions on 0800 716 236.
