Welsh rugby stars will be taking on some traditional fuel tomorrow (Saturday) when they join crowds sampling cawl in Saundersfoot.

Alun Wyn Jones and Leigh Halfpenny are on a short break from Six Nations duty before the Welsh campaign continues the following week.

The duo will be in the village to play a winning role in the Cawl Championships of the World.....and Elsewhere.

The popular event is organised by Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism (SCT).

It’s the headliner for the village’s ‘Cawl by the Sea’ day, which will also feature a showcase of Saundersfoot events and organisations, live music and an evening concert.

Said SCT chairman, Phil Odley: “We’re delighted to welcome Alun and Leigh to Saundersfoot and we’re sure that the nourishment they receive from all the cawl on offer will help them and their team-mates when they take on Italy next Sunday week.”

Seven local eating establishments will be serving up gallons of tasty cawl, created from their own special recipes, between noon and 2.30 pm. Commemorative cawl bowls will be on sale from the Regency Hall from 11 am.

Hoping to retain its title from 2017 will be The Boat House, but there will also be challenges from three-times winners, The Old Chemist Inn; The Regency Hall; Marina Fish, Chips and More; Beachside Barbecue; The Salvage Bar and Periwinkle Tearoom and Pottery.

This year, there are three extra accolades up for grabs - the Chairman’s Choice, voted for by Mr. Odley and Saundersfoot Community Council chairman, Anthony Mattick; the Captain’s Choice selected by Alun Wyn Jones and the Kicker’s Choice of Leigh Halfpenny.

The rugby players will be presenting Cawl Trail winners with their awards in the Regency Hall at 3.30 pm, where there will also be a draw for a signed Wales rugby shirt.

Welsh afternoon teas in the hall and a Dragon Trail around the village will add to the family fun of the event, while in the evening, the Regency Hall will be the venue for a special Welsh concert.

This will feature the award-winning South Wales Gay Men’s Chorus, giving their debut Pembrokeshire performance. They will be supported by popular local duo Fiddlebox, playing traditional Welsh folk music and songs of the sea.

The concert will be compered by Tenby Male Choir’s chairman and compere, David Blackmore.

Tickets for the concert are £10 and are available from Little and Large Lite Bites, the Regency Hall and The Marina in Saundersfoot, or by calling 07951 578550. The concert starts at 7.30 pm, with doors open at 7 pm.
