Sir,
I would like, through the columns of your newspaper, to make an appeal for volunteers to help with the 'Cars for Carers' scheme. Carers perform an essential role in our communities, often unpaid, but with a 24-hour day, seven-day-a-week commitment to care for a loved one. Many carers do not have their own transport or access to public transport.
In order to ease their burden, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) has started a scheme using volunteer drivers to take them, door to door, on essential journeys such as shopping, visiting the GP or dentist etc. This enables carers to plan their trips and organise respite care where necessary.
RSVP is looking for volunteers who own their own cars and would be willing to give up a few hours each week to help on this scheme. We are able to use drivers up to the age of 85 and pay expenses of 40p/mile.
If you feel that you would like to help with this project, please contact Jill Edge on (01437) 768195.
