The new mascots for Dyfed Powys Police Dog Unit have now got names - thanks to local schoolchildren.

A competition was run in schools in the force area to name the two cartoon dogs which will be used in publicity material and on the force website.

Numerous entries were received and the winning names were chosen by the police, with the entries being selected at random for those chosen names.

The winners are Georgia Ward from Llanmiloe CP School, who named the male dog Rover, and Ieuan Jones from Ysgol Llanafan, who named the female dog Sandy.

Inspector Nigel Hayes, of the dog unit, said: "We were inundated with entrants from many schools and all those pupils who took part are thanked for their participation.

"We have had fun reading the names and there were some excellent suggestions and each pupil should be commended on their use of imagination when naming the mascots.

"The winners received a VIP tour of headquarters and got the chance to meet some real police dogs."

The winners also received a voucher for themselves and a £20 voucher for school donated by Royal Canin.
