With Tenby Round Table set to stage their second Summer Spectacular of the season this Sunday at Tenby Harbour, from 3 pm - ‘Tabler’ Richard Dooner shares his thoughts on how the charity event is run by his fellow members and what it means to them and the community.
“There are unexpected times when you see the best of people - amazing strength, character. All the better for knowing that the teamwork, hard work and unselfish application is not for money, glory or recognition of self; but for others. Because a community needs it. Because there’s a job to be done and this is the time that ordinary extraordinary people get to put something back. You realise that these are the folks who follow through. Who you can count on.
“Tenby Harbour, Sunday, August 9, 2015, 11 pm, at night and its raining hard.
“Twelve tired men are putting tables away, dismantling tents and clearing rubbish. Talk is practical and few orders are given. No one shouts, no one complains.
“Each individual sees what needs to be done and gets on with it. Beer cans and discarded cups are picked up. A mush of beer, sand and cigarettes is swept. Tents descend.
“Less than two hours after the last of some 6,000 members of public have cleared the area; it’s all put away with the site clean. Back as it was at the start; 15 hours earlier. When the same 12 volunteers were there doing the heavy lifting; setting the whole thing up.
“Few see this. What they do see is seven hours of entertainment in the form of music and support acts; followed by a professional firework display that many people plan their holiday to see. All paid for by £1 at the gate, the price of a burger and takings from the bar. Thousands watch and listen from surrounding streets without paying anything at all.
“Those who come down to the harbour see the same men who organised the event, set everything up and will later clear away; manning the gates, serving food and drink, and running entertainments like the dunk tank and human fruit machine.
“They also see the friends helping out. This year saw the regulars of 41 Club, Ladies Circle and Tenby Sailing Club joined by Valero Volunteers; and there’s always help. Good help.
“If all goes well and there’s something left over; money made will go to the good causes that Round Table supports. Every penny made goes to charity. Because those 12 men and their friends are all volunteers, who do this event for free. At a time when most of them are at their busiest and could easily have worked in their businesses or stayed at home with their feet up.
‘#DoMore’ says the T-shirt. Tenby Round Table does this twice a year. No one really knows when it all started, but it’s been 40 years at least and some kind of summer event was likely for each of the 60 years since Tenby Round Table was established.
“Each of those who works on the ‘Summer Spec’ is well aware of the legacy they follow and of the help and appreciation of the people of Tenby. The fireworks might be spectacular; but what’s really spectacular is the way that it happens, the reason it happens and the people of Tenby who make it happen.”
