At a recent meeting of Tenby Rotary Club, Ruth Webb was delighted to receive a cheque for £100 on behalf of the Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru.
Ruth thanked the Rotary Club sincerely for their generosity in supporting Prostate Cymru.
Ruth explained that the charity is dedicated to fighting prostate cancer, procuring the best, latest equipment and raising awareness here in the principality.
Annually throughout the UK, men’s prostate cancer claims 11,000 lives, with up to 32,000 new cases diagnosed. They are rare in men under 50, but the condition becomes more pronounced and common with age.
Early stage prostate cancer has very few or no symptoms, but is potentially curable at this stage, so it is extremely important for men to be proactive and speak about their prostate health every time they visit their doctor.
The charity aims to help Welsh men by improving equipment for prostate treatments to ensure that they have access to the best possible treatments available on the NHS. Prostate Cymru works with medical professionals at all stages of their careers, from medical students to consultants, to further their urological education and knowledge so that Welsh men have the best possible outcome.
For a Welshman, the risk of having prostate cancer is one in eight. The risk increases dramatically to one in three if there is a family history of the disease - father/brother. Afro-Caribbean men have a one in four risk of prostate cancer.
The charity is happy to liaise with any group and bring information to that society. Please contact Ruth Webb on (01834) 843504 to arrange a meeting.
