Another successful annual Rotary Charity Golf Day took place last week on the historic links at Tenby Golf Club.

Once again the event was very well supported by local businesses, with a total of 16 teams of three taking part.

On this occasion, players had to contend with a stiff westerly wind, which got stronger during the day, and later in the round a persistent drizzle fell, making it quite a test for those who teed-off in the final groupings.

Not surprisingly, final scores were lower than in the past two years and only three teams exceeded the 70-point mark. Nevertheless, all competitors expressed their enjoyment of the event in their pursuit of claiming the attractive prizes on offer.

Eventually the prizes were distributed as follows: 1. 79 pts Western Power (Jeremy Thompson, Berian Jones and Trevor Palmer); 2. 75 pts Beachdean Leisure (Niclas Thomas, Michael Schooling and Roger Schooling); 3. 71 pts Saundersfoot Sports Club (John Austin, Chris Hawks and Richard Prout).

The prize for nearest the pin was won by Berian Jones (Western Power), whose ball alighted just six inches from the hole for an inevitable birdie. Longest drive prize was taken by Paul Hoyland, playing in the Alexander Partnership team.

First prize in the traditional raffle was a mouth-watering round for two on the championship links at Royal Porthcawl. It was won by Gavin Scotcher, who very quickly acquired some new friends!

A thoroughly enjoyable competition was rounded off in fine style by an evening dinner and guest speaker Cliff Golledge, a well known name in evening speaking circles, who proved to be a most able raconteur.

The Rotary Clubs wish to sincerely thank all sponsors. The event is now into its 18th year and is an established part of the Rotary and Golf Club calendar. Since inception, total funds raised for charity exceeds £25,000 and it is appropriate to add that the event has been supported every year to date by local business M. J. Rossiter & Sons Ltd.
