The September meeting of Pembroke Rotarty Club epitomised how Rotary and individual Rotarians work together, and the kind of work they do.

The president, Robert McLaren, and club members welcomed fellow Rotarians from Warrington in the north of England and nearer home, Milford Haven.

A pleasant meal and friendly exchanges of stories was followed by the formal business for the evening.

George Wilkinson is president of the Rotary Club of Warrington. He and his wife Pam regaled members with their experiences of walking the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast from Cardigan to Amroth, a distance of 180 miles, whilst raising funds for charity.

On a serious note, and in his capacity as president for this year, George explained that his chosen charity is the Tim Parry/Jonathan Ball Peace Foundation - a charity that works nationally and internationally for peace and non-violent conflict resolution. The link of this charity with Warrington and the work it does can be found by searching www.peace-foundation.org.uk

Readers can donate online if they would like to support this highly respected charity.

Rotarians Mike Peake and Joe Mayne from the Milford Haven Club both participated in a lively discussion about the merits and opportunities of Rotary’s RYLA scheme (Rotary Youth Leadership Award). This is an intensive training experience for young people aged between 14 and 30, who are nominated to attend a seminar, camp or workshop organised by Rotary and run by professional activity instructors. Participants are generally sponsored by individual cubs as an investment in the future of young people. The scheme is particularly popular with the Pembroke club who has strong working relationships with the new Ysgol Harri Tudur

The RYLA programme is highly varied and combines organisational, physical and sporting activities in addition to the opportunity to develop discussion, social and leadership skills.
