The timing of resurfacing works on a busy route into Saundersfoot and Tenby towards the tail end of the summer has been criticised by a local councillor.
Work authorised by Pembrokeshire County Council started on August 18 on the A478 causing huge traffic congestion around the locality during the summer holidays.
Saundersfoot county councillor, Chris WIlliams said that he received numerous calls from residents across the village expressing serious concerns regarding the tar and stone resurfacing works carried out on the Moreton Road between Wooden and the New Hedges roundabout.
“The works were completed in August, but residents raised issues about the lack of visible road markings on the A478 east of the New Hedges roundabout, particularly the absence of a clear right-turn filter lane into Sandy Hill Road,” he explained.
“Without these markings, there was a genuine risk of unsafe overtaking manoeuvres near the junction, especially by drivers unfamiliar with the area.
“Traffic speeds along this stretch of road have also been reported as being too high, further compounding safety concerns.
“I contacted the relevant departments and temporary signage and bollards were installed to mitigate immediate risks.
“While I appreciate the response and understand that weather conditions in September delayed the completion of the permanent line marking, I must express disappointment that the process took so long to resolve. By mid-September, resurfacing and line marking works were still ongoing, causing significant traffic delays in both directions.
“Given the volume of vehicles entering the county ahead of the Ironman weekend, it would have been preferable for this work to have been completed beforehand to minimise disruption and ensure the highest safety standards.
“I would ask that, in future, greater consideration be given to the timing and sequencing of such works, particularly on key routes into the county, to prevent similar issues from arising,” he added.
