Over 70 players took to the pitch last week for a hockey roadshow.

The Hockey Wales Roadshow visited Haverfordwest on Wednesday to inspire new - and more experienced - players in the game.

Players of all ages and abilities turned up to the astro turf pitch at Sir Thomas Picton School to learn new skills.

Angela Miles, hockey development officer for Sport Pembrokeshire, the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council, said she was delighted so many had turned out on what was a miserable damp evening.

"It shows the appetite there is in the county for the sport and the potential it has to grow," she said.

"As well as learning new skills, players were also able to test out an inflatable hockey pitch and try out a speed test cage to see how fast they could hit the ball."

Organised by Hockey Wales and Sport Pembrokeshire, the hockey roadshow is travelling around the country with the aim of developing the game in Wales.

Hockey Wales' Vision 2020 sets out a series of targets to boost hockey's role by increasing the number of people playing - youngsters and adults - as well as the number of coaches and volunteers involved in the game.

Organisers hope that by 2020 hockey will be a bigger and more successful sport both regionally, nationally and internationally with Wales ranked in the top 10 in Europe and with at least two to four players in the GB squad at the 2020 Olympics.

Local coaches Sophie Rees, Sarah Martin, Ffion Williams and Julie Campbell helped out with coaching at last Wednesday's event as well as hockey development officers Bev Rogers and Judith Powell from Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Haverfordwest Ladies Hockey Club and Pembroke County Men's Hockey Club provided training facilities for the event.
