The Aimhigher Wales roadshow will be rolling into Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, Whitland, today (Friday), to provide Year 9 pupils with accurate, up-to-date information about higher education, and to offer students a chance to win an exciting rally opportunity and £1,000 for their school. The NatWest and Welsh Assembly Government sponsored roadshow is held on board a hi-tech trailer, which opens up to become a mini-cinema. Groups of 15 pupils at a time come on board the trailer to watch a DVD, use laptops to access information about courses and careers, and have a question and answer session with the Aimhigher roadshow presenter. Recent graduate, Llinos Williams, will be presenting the roadshow in Carmarthenshire. Llinos draws on her own experiences at university to tell pupils about higher education options and the realities of student life. "This is a great opportunity for local pupils to find out about the benefits of higher education," said Llinos. "It is vital that young people in the area are aware of the opportunities available to them both locally and at universities across the country. We want to let them know that there are some fantastic courses out there, and that going on to university can expand their horizons and ultimately lead to their dream job." Aimhigher Wales has also joined forces with Swansea Institute's school of industrial design to launch a competition to find talented young designers. The 'Celticar 05' competition is open to all Year 9 pupils across Wales. Teams entering the competition are asked to design a Welsh car with universal appeal. The winners will be awarded a unique rally experience and a £1,000 prize for their school. The Aimhigher Wales campaign is supported by Welsh rally co-driver and World Rally champion 2003, Phil Mills, who helped launch the Celticar 05 competition this year. "Competing in the World Rally Championship was my childhood dream," said Phil. "Now that dream is a reality and I get to travel the world and compete in rally driving at the highest level. I'm one of the lucky few to make it to the top as a rally co-driver, but anyone with a passion for performance cars should remember that there is a wide range of opportunities available, working behind the scenes in motor sport. "I would definitely recommend HE to anyone. It can open doors within any industry, and can lead to a top-level job. I wouldn't be able to do my job without my rally team - and the skills, qualifications and experience they have put me on the road to becoming World Rally champion." Other campaign supporters include Ryan Giggs, Jamie Baulch, Tanni Grey-Thompson and Huw Edwards.
