Tributes have been paid to a well-known South Pembrokeshire hockey stalwart who tragically died in a road accident on Tuesday evening.

Forty-eight-year-old Martin Fieldhouse, of Milton, was travelling home from his mother-in-law's funeral in Birmingham when the accident occurred on the A40 west of Penblewin roundabout, near Narberth, at approximately 8 pm.

Mr. Fieldhouse's sons, Rob and Andrew, were also in the car at the time of the accident. Both were taken to Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, from where it is understood Rob has been discharged, but Andrew has been kept in for treatment to a head injury.

Mr. Fieldhouse was a stalwart of Carew Hockey Club.

Club captain and coach Bernie Wheeler paid tribute saying: "Martin was an invaluable member of Carew Hockey Club and will be greatly missed by all the club members.

"Martin's playing career started late in life, with Martin coming along to watch his son Rob play for the club.

"Taking up the stick, Martin played in the Carew 1st XI squad and then threw himself into the deep end when in his second season he took on the captaincy of the 2nd XI.

"As well as a player, Martin was also an umpire whose services were called upon by both men's and ladies' teams in the county.

"As described by many, he was 'a really decent bloke'."

Pembrokeshire County Councillor David Neale, who represents the Carew electoral division on the authority, said: "The whole community has been both shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of Mr. Fieldhouse in this tragic accident.

"Knowing the family on a personal basis as I do, I would like to take this opportunity to convey to them my personal condolences along with those of the community within which Martin was held in such high esteem."

Police are requesting that any witnesses to the accident contact the Roads Policing Unit at Haverfordwest on 101
