‘Active Travel’ improvements within Saundersfoot Village are still advancing well, one of the seaside village’s county councillors has stated - with the Local Authority also looking at plans developed for a road priority improvement underneath the rail bridge on Station Road, due to the nature of the road.
South ward county councillor Chris Williams explained: “This is quite a tricky section of carriageway and formalising a priority system is considered beneficial.
“As well as road safety benefits the scheme would formalise the footway underneath the structure. These works will require a road closure application and temporary diversions for the works to be completed.
“This is not yet programmed, however we will be looking to undertake the changes after the summer period.”
He said that Pembrokeshire County Council’s latest phase of the ‘Active Travel’ project, connecting parts of the village, has seen the construction of the connection between The Incline and Incline Way estate advancing, with the ramp construction formed in gabions to build up to desired levels ready for final fencing and surfacing.
Works will then continue down to Westfield Court where alterations will be completed to link the route between improvements on The Incline to Brooklyn Place, with final surfacing of a tar ‘n chip surface finish to follow.
“All signage and wayfinding will follow with an official final opening of the path then being programmed once these elements are complete,” continued Cllr Williams.
“Works to complete elements of fencing are programmed for near to the rail station and the link down to the SUP crossing position on Station Road/Fan Road.
“An engineering study along The Ridgeway is considering the highway connectivity and safety and whether improvements can be achieved.
“This study includes initial review of the existing situation so that the designers fully understand the measures that are best place to make improvements, this will result with an option report and potential phasing plans for future civils improvement, subject to funding.
“There is still work to be programmed at the Incline Way estate to improve two junctions. These will happen later in the financial year once other works are complete.”

Funding from Welsh Government recently awarded, will see phased improvements within the village, the phasing is not as yet programmed and information will be shared once known.
“We will be looking at three phases of improvements/works, initial phase including connection between Milford Street/Harbour junction to Stammers Road,” remarked Cllr Williams.
“The second phase will be dependent on completion of design development along Cambrian Terrace. This section will also require engagement over potential land transfers if current layouts are advanced.
“A third phase then being advancement towards completion of detail design for Francis Road.
Further construction works will progress over September/October for a first section, with further improvements potentially in the new year between January and March.
Recently minor ‘road safety’ improvements were completed north of Coppet Sands, which formalises the highway arrangements and allows for pedestrians road space to more safely negotiate the section of the highway.
