A recent Pembrokeshire-wide appeal to local readers has yielded a very positive response. The 'Tea for Ten-by' idea, to raise funds for the town's new Lifeboat Station, has already brought in £244. Donations have even come from far afield, and thanks are due to Mr. Doug Nicholls in Nottingham, Mr. and Mrs. Ivor Jenkins in Cheshire and Mrs. J. Hanson (nee Dart) in Walsall for their most generous support. Julia Scholfield, of Tenby, raised a wonderful £64!
The notion of people throughout the county getting together with friends for a cup of tea or coffee, and raising money for the RNLI in the process, will foster a spirit of friendship. It is hoped that more supporters will try to collect £10 (or whatever they can manage), and offices, schools and businesses are also urged to join in, with a tea-break for a good cause.
It is now time for those who prefer a night out at the bar to try and help. This year the RNLI celebrates its 180th year and is asking as many pubs and clubs as possible to help with the Tenby Lifeboat Station Appeal by running an event with a theme based on this figure. It might be a darts match, with the maximum 180 score as everyone's goal, a quiz evening with 180 questions, a social for 180 people or, best of all, a target figure of £180.
The fund-raising committee is challenging all hostelries, however small, to come up with a novel idea to help swell the total, which at present stands at £8,026. The Observer will be delighted to carry news of your particular occasion.
First to come up with a suggestion, to launch the Pub Challenge, is The Bristol Trader in Haverfordwest, where proprietors Brian and Margaret have pledged to fill a gallon whisky bottle with money in 180 days!
The target of £20,000 is growing closer and everyone is urged to be part of the project. A car boot sale of unwanted items, baking a batch of cakes and selling to friends, simply emptying a small change pot (nearly all gentlemen pile their spare coppers somewhere!) or organising a car-wash for neighbours, we'd love to hear of as many schemes as possible, county-wide, so that we can feature your contributions.
Jennie McIntosh, the appeal's local representative, can be contacted by 'phone on 01834 812125 or 07966 552445, or at Braeside, East Williamston, and is delighted with the wonderful letters she has already received.
