Sir,

Naomi Meaney is right to highlight the problems regarding getting an appointment at Tenby Surgery. Having worked for 15 years in a medical practice, I am certain however that the staff are committed and hard-working in what can be a busy and demanding environment.

It is the inflexible appointment system itself that is unsatisfactory. For those unfortunate to require a doctor's consultation, to hang on the telephone for an excessive amount of time or to attend in person (possibly involving the help of friends, neighbours or family) must only add to their anxiety.

An additional point is the cost of phone calls, since they are not charged at local rate. I particularly sympathise with the working population who perhaps need follow-up or non-urgent appointments and are unable to book ahead around their schedules.

B. Owen,
