On a perfect summer evening, members of the Ridgeway History Group met at Cresswell Quay. Local historian Pat Simpson was there to meet us (writes R.G.)
Using a map dating from 1755, Pat was able to illustrate how busy the quay had once been. Not, in fact, 'the Quay', but five quays owned by local landowners. There was also a coal yard, a culm bank, a lime kiln and two counting houses. There had been, we were relieved to know, a pub, but not the present one, which at that time had been a farmhouse.
The more energetic in the group followed Pat across the stepping stones, while the thirsty members headed straight off for a cooling drink.
On July 16, we plan to visit the Royal Commission for Ancient Monuments in Aberystwyth.
New members are always welcome. As you can see, we enjoy an interesting and varied programme.
