A conducted visit to the new Tenby Lifeboat Station in May was unavoidably cancelled. This has now been rescheduled to Wednesday, June 27, at 7 pm. It promises to be an interesting and enjoyable evening. On June 6, 21 members gathered at Front Street, Pembroke Dock, to be met by David James, honorary secretary of West Wales Maritime Heritage Society. The society was formed in 1984 to encourage the preservation of craft, buildings and sites of historical interest, to foster the skills associated with the repair and handling of such craft and to set-up centres where the ongoing work could be shown to the public to best advantage. Previously, on a chilly evening in February last year at the Skrinkle Centre, David had given the group an excellent and amusing talk on the History of Maritime and Dockyard connections in Pembrokeshire, and so it was especially pleasant on such a perfect June evening to follow this up with an on-site viewing of craft at all stages of preservation and restoration. Memorably were the already completed 18ft Trinity House Lightship Jender/Lifeboat General Picton and the 28ft Quest. Under restoration was the 52ft Admiralty Steam Harbour Service Launch HSL 296. Waiting in the wings was a large variety of ex- working Pembrokeshire boats such as The Pembroke Mallard, the Pembrokeshire Dinghy Tern, a Dale Gig Fisherman's boat Agnes and a Milford five-tonne steam locomotive crane. So no shortage of challenging projects! At present, a matter of great concern to the society is that the site of their workshops off Western Way forms part of a large area currently scheduled for redevelopment. It is vital that the work of the West Wales Maritime Heritage Society can be successfully integrated in any such scheme. The Ridgeway History Group outing on July 5 is to Aberaeron and Llanerchaeron. There will be no meeting in August. The Autumn programme starts on September 5 with David Holt whose topic is 'Whales in Wales', 7.30 pm at the Skrinkle Community Centre. New members and guests welcome. Talks are lively and interesting and take place on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30 pm. Confirm with Denise on (01834) 871209.
